A family was left with many questions and with a big void after the sudden death of two children.
A 12-year-old boy of Washington, shot and killed his teenage sister with a gun before he turned the weapon on himself, investigators said.
Benton County Police ruled the deaths of Ethan Austin, 12, and his 16-year-old stepsister, Kadie, a murder-suicide.
Drew Austin, who is the father of Ethan and the stepfather of Kadie, found the two dead in a bedroom. The 16-year-old girl suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the torso and head, while her little brother was found with a single gunshot wound to the head, police said.
Ethan, who was an avid hunter and a Boy Scout, used his father’s gun to kill his sister and then himself, authorities said. The gun was kept in a safe, but the sixth grader had access to it.
Ethan loved to hunt with his father. The two often went on hunting trips together, and the child was allowed to handle firearms under the supervision of his parents, investigators said.
Ethan did not have any known mental health problem, the family attorney, Scott Johnson, said. The children did not have drugs or alcohol in their systems at the time of the incident, a toxicology report revealed.
Police do not know the motive for the murder-suicide. According to the family, the siblings getting along very well.
The children are survived by their parents, Cyndi and Drew, and their sister, Rachel. May they rest in peace.
