(Scroll down for video) A baby girl survived her mother’s attempt to drown her in the ocean, police in New Jersey said.
Police arrested 23-year-old Patricia Shurig, after witnesses saw the woman throw her baby into the ocean off Atlantic City.
Witnesses told police that they saw the woman walking towards the ocean with her newborn baby and asked what she was doing.
However, the woman did not respond and continued walking towards the ocean. She then tossed the baby into the water before she left.
Police believe that the woman wanted to commit suicide.
Several fishermen, who were near the Flagship Hotel along the bay on Pacific Avenue around 5:00 p.m., ran to save the mother and her baby.
Thomas Bell, a retired firefighter, performed CPR on the baby. “She spit up a large amount of water,” he said.
The baby girl is just one month old, according to authorities. Both the baby and her mother were taken to a local hospital for observation.
Shurig was charged with aggravated assault and could face other charges. She is being held on $100,000 bail.
