A man died of a heart attack after drinking more than 50 cups of alcohol in attempt to break a record, doctors in France said.

Now, Paris Police launched an investigation after the death of 57-year-old Julien Barteaux, who was allowed to drink at a bar until he died.

The man was trying to beat the previous record of 55 cups in the bar, which is located in Clermont-Ferrand.

He gulped down 30 cups in the space of a minute, according to the police investigation. The man was driven home by his friends.

He died on Saturday, after falling into a coma and suffering a heart attack. The bar manager said that the man was drinking too fast and he advised him to stop after the first 30 cups.

However, a family member disputed this version of events, saying he was only stopped after he drank 56 cups. The family is asking police to hold the bar responsible for his death.

Police said that the manager of the bar could be charged with failure to assist a person in danger.
