(Scroll down for video) A woman was arrested, charged and convicted for going against the system after attending a men’s ball game, prosecutors in Iran said.
Now, the woman, who is also a British citizen, was sentenced to one year in jail after being found guilty of propagating against the ruling system.
25-year-old Ghoncheh Ghavami was arrested at the Freedom Stadium in Tehran, during a volleyball match between Iran and Italy.
Women are banned from attending games played by men. Ghavami tried to enter the game with other women to protest the ban.
Ghavami was held for several hours and then released, but was arrested again a few days later. The Chief of Police said that it was not in the public interest for men and women to attend sporting events together.
“The police are enforcing the law all the time,” he said in a statement. Women are also banned from attending football matches in order to protect them from lewd behavior from men.
Ghavami is being held in solitary confinement at the Evin prison in Tehran. She started a hunger strike earlier this month in order to win her release.
