(Scroll down for video) A mother was arrested, charged and convicted of murder after killing her young foster daughter, prosecutors in Texas said.
Police in Cameron, said that 2-year-old Alex Hill was killed while in foster care.
Now, her foster mother, 55-year-old Sherill Small, was sentenced to serve life in prison.
According to the police investigation, Hill was placed in foster care after her father, Joshua Hill, admitted to using marijuana after the child went to bed.
Texas Child Welfare investigators determined that marijuana use and the medical condition of the child’s mother justify the removal of Alex from the house.
The child had appeared healthy and happy with her parents, but she was placed in foster care last year. The mother of Alex, Mary Sweeny, saw bruises on her child during visits and reported it to the authorities.
Small admitted to police that she slammed Alex into the floor, but it was an accident. An autopsy however, revealed that the child was deliberately assaulted.
Investigators found bruises all over her body.
The husband of the foster mother, who is a recovering drug addict, admitted to authorities that he used drugs at the home, but investigators still believed that the house was a safe environment for Alex.
