(Scroll down for video) A woman claims that a police officer shot and killed her mentally ill son after she called for help to give him his medication, police in Florida said.
The Gretna Police Department said that Sergeant Charles Brown fatally shot 24-year-old Kaldrick Donald, during an altercation at his home.
Brown responded to the home after the mother reported that her son is refusing to take his medication.
According to Donald’s mother, on Tuesday morning around 9:30 a.m., she called the police to help her with her son’s medication, and one officer showed up.
Brown ended up Tasering Donald repeatedly, and then took him into a bathroom in the family’s home,where he shot him multiple times.
The details of what happened between Brown and Kaldrick are limited. Brown was wounded, and he was taken to a nearby hospital.
Brown was placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.
Sheriff Morris A. Young released the following statement regarding Kaldrick Donald:
“Any loss of life, particularly a young life, is extremely unfortunate. Our condolences go out to the Donald family. We would encourage prayers and support for the family of Officer Brown, as certainly both families are impacted greatly by this unfortunate occurrence. As a father, I can’t imagine the difficulty of this situation. As the Sheriff of Gadsden County, I intend to get answers so that justice can be served.
“I understand that there are planned demonstrations for today and perhaps there will be additional ones in the near future. I not only welcome, but also support the right of expression by way of peaceful demonstrations. On our end, we will continue to protect and serve our community by ensuring public safety. I would ask and encourage demonstrators to promote peaceful expressions of support for Kaldrick Donald and his family.”
