Authorities have arrested 10 police officers for corruption.
The police officers are learning the hard way that nobody is above the law in South Africa.
One sergeant, nine police officers and a former employee, were arrested on corruption charges they committed while working at the Parow Police Station.
The suspects are accused of taking bribes from suspects to make their cases go away. The officers allegedly made evidence disappear after being paid.
The men were arrested by members of their own police department in an effort to combat corruption.
Western Cape commissioner Lieutenant-General Arno Lamoer welcomed the arrests. “This will send a strong message to all officials that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated,” he said.
“We will leave no stone unturned when it comes to corrupt officials,” Lamoer added.
Lamoer assured the community that although they arrested a large number of officers, the police station would not be affected and service will not be compromised.
“Measures have been put in place before the officers were arrested to ensure that all services are available,” he said.
The suspects will be brought before the Bellville Magistrate’s Court in Western Cape.
