(Scroll down for video) A man suffered injuries to his eyes after insulting a woman by mistaking him for a man, witnesses at a theater in California said.

The incident began when the man and the woman sat next to each other in a movie theater.

The woman was using her cell phone, which was disturbing the man while watching a movie at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood on Monday night.

“Excuse me sir, could you please turn off the display,” the man asked the woman. After repeating himself several times, without a response, the man tapped the woman on the shoulder.

She reacted angrily to being touched, and was mad that he called her sir. She stood up and started cursing, saying “You hit me, hit me, I’ll call the police.”

She took out a can of mace from her purse and pointed it directly at the man’s face. The fighting lasted for nearly a minute.

The man was sprayed in the eyes at close range. The woman sat down and continued watching the movie until security guards escorted her out 20 minutes later.

The man and his partner left the theater immediately after the assault.
