(Scroll down for video) A man was arrested, charged and convicted of manslaughter after killing his landlord because he made too much noise while cooking soup, prosecutors in Canada said.

Shaun Peter Desautels of Calgary, was originally charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Alexander Potoroka.

According to the police investigation, Desautels had been trying to sleep when he heard Potoroka in the kitchen. He got angry and confronted Potoroka before choking him.

Potoroka was taken to a hospital, but was pronounced brain dead and died the next day. The autopsy confirmed asphyxia as the cause of death.

Desautels also threatened to kill a witness who tried to stop the attack. Desautels has six previous convictions for assault, one for choking the 13-year-old daughter of his former wife.

Desautels will be sentenced to 10 years in prison as part of a plea bargain agreement with prosecutors.
