Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown said that the man of Laurelton, is being charged with murder, assault and other charges for allegedly ramming his car into the crowd of people, following the fight at the baby shower he attended.

“The defendant is accused of using his car as a weapon. Following a dispute with partygoers, the defendant allegedly got behind the wheel and drove into the crowd of people. One man died and two women were injured. The defendant now faces a lengthy prison sentence if convicted,” Brown said.

The defendant, 21-year-old Kevin Weekes, is hospitalized and is awaiting arraignment in Queens Criminal Court on second-degree murder, first and second-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment and leaving scene of an incident where a death occurred.

If convicted, Weekes will face up to 25 years to life in prison.

According to the police investigation, the defendant got into a dispute with others at the baby shower, which was held at a catering hall located at 224-22 Merrick Boulevard just after 8:00 p.m. on Saturday.

The defendant left the party and got into his car. He made a U-turn, accelerated and jumped the curb. The vehicle slammed into the people on the sidewalk.

A 19-year-old woman from Rosedale, and a 21-year-old woman from Brooklyn, were injured when they were struck by the car.

20-year-old Kevin Lewis was pinned underneath the vehicle and dragged by the car until it came to a stop at the intersection of Merrick Boulevard and 225 Street.

The defendant exited the car and fled the scene.
