(Scroll down for video) A mother who fought for custody of her child, was arrested charged and convicted of murder after killing her little son, prosecutors in Utah said.
Second District Judge Thomas L. Kay sentenced 31-year-old Stephanie, to 20 years to life in prison for aggravated murder, and from one to 15 years in prison for obstruction of justice.
He ordered the sentences to be served concurrently as part of a plea agreement.
4-year-old Ethan Stacy was sent from Virginia to live with his biological mother, Stephanie Sloop, and her fiance, 35-year-old Nathan Sloop, because of a family court order.
In just one week, Ethan was severely beaten, burned and overmedicated. When Ethan died, the couple tried to conceal the crime by defacing the body.
Ethan was buried in a shallow grave near Powder Mountain in Weber County. Dog food was sprinkled on top of his grave.
In exchange for pleading guilty, prosecutors agreed to drop charges of intentionally inflicting serious bodily injury to a child and abuse or desecration of a dead human body.
Nathan Sloop pleaded guilty to aggravated murder but mentally ill. By accepting a plea deal, Sloop was spared from the death penalty if he had been convicted by a jury.
A judge sentenced him to 25 years to life in prison.
