11 children die after dump truck carrying sand overturned on top of their van

Parents are mourning the loss of eleven school children, who were killed in an accident.

Police said that a van carrying the young children to school was involved in a traffic accident in Shandong, China.

Eleven children along with the driver were killed. Three adults, who were also inside the van, survived and suffered only minor injuries.

The accident occurred about 7:30 a.m. in Penglai, when a dump truck filled with sand overturned, spilling its contents on the van.

More than two thirds of the vehicle was covered in sand. The van roof collapsed under the weight of the sand and the windows shattered.

Police said that the maximum occupancy of the van is 8 people, but the van carried 15 passengers at the time of the accident. The driver of the tractor trailer has been detained by police.

People have asked schools to start using school buses after a traffic accident involving a school vehicle without license killed 18 children. In that incident, the vehicle was carrying a total of 64 preschoolers, and was equipped with only nine seats.
