(Scroll down for video) A police officer is under investigation after fatally shooting a boy who was playing with an air gun in a playground, police in Ohio said.
Cleveland Police said that two officers were called to the Cudell Recreation Center at 3:30 p.m., where the 12-year-old child was seen waving the gun around.
Officers ordered the child to put down his weapon, but when he ignored the order, police opened fire. They also said that an orange plastic used to identify toy guns was not present.
“After arriving at the scene, officers located the suspect and advised him to raise his hands. The suspect did not comply with the orders of the officers and reached for the gun. Shots were fired and the suspect was hit in the torso. The weapon was an “airsoft” replica, resembling a semiautomatic pistol, with the orange safety plastic removed,” a spokesperson for the Cleveland Police said.
The two officers who responded to the scene, were placed on paid administrative leave while the shooting is being investigated, which is the usual protocol in such incidents.
