(Scroll down for video) A woman was arrested on charges of attempted murder after allegedly dumping her newborn baby into a sewer, police in Australia said.
Sydney Police said that they 30-year-old mother who dumped her baby in the sewer, was denied bail.
According to the police investigation, Saifale Nai dumped her baby in a Quakers Hill drain on Tuesday, 24 hours after giving birth.
That means that the boy survived in the drain for five days before being found by a cyclist on Sunday morning. The baby is now in a stable condition at Westmead Children’s Hospital.
Police suspect that the baby was squeezed through the narrow opening of the storm drain before falling about 8 feet.
After a cyclist heard a baby screaming underground on Sunday, several people raised the heavy slab covering, revealing the baby.
The baby was found wrapped in a hospital blanket just after 7:30 a.m.
“The boy was malnourished and dehydrated. I doubt that the baby would have survived another day in the drain,” a police spokesperson said.
Nai faces 25 years in prison if convicted.
