(Scroll down for video) A car thief was caught after a building collapsed on top of her, police in Missouri said.
The Kansas City Police Department said that the vehicle involved in a police chase on Thursday morning, crashed into a building at 18th and Oak streets, causing part of the brick structure to collapse on top of her.
The driver suffered injuries that were not considered life threatening, Kansas City Fire Battalion Chief James Garrett said. She was taken by ambulance to a hospital.
The police began chasing the vehicle, a white van that had been reported stolen shortly after 10:00 a.m.
They abandoned the chase until another officer saw the vehicle near 12th Street and Prospect Avenue, and began pursuing her.
The vehicle ran past traffic lights and stop signs at speeds up to 80 miles per hour, police said. At one point, the vehicle turned south on Oak Street.
On 18th Street, the driver lost control of the vehicle after hitting a fire hydrant. A section of the building collapsed on the vehicle.
“Fortunately, the building has been vacant,” police said. Engineers were inspecting the integrity of the building after the accident.
