Several restaurant in Saudi Arabia, announced that they are prohibiting single women from entering their restaurants because they cause too much drama.
Women’s rights organizations are blasting the decision, saying that the move is a violation of a woman’s basic human rights.
Members of the National Society for Human Rights (NSHR) called on the restaurants to remove the signs, which state “single women are not allowed.”
NSHR spokesperson Khalid Al-Fakhri said that the posters were placed by the owners of the restaurant and not by the modesty police.
“These signs are against the law and reflect the personal opinions of the restaurant owners,” Al-Fakhri said. “Restaurants should come up with alternative solutions if their customers behave inappropriately,” he added.
“We put up these signs because we saw single women flirting with male customers,” one restaurant owner said. Some locals support the ban, saying that women behave terribly in restaurants.
“Some women smoke cigarettes, prompting the modesty police to shut down the restaurant for the night. They cause too much drama,” one man said.
“Women play with their phones and disturb other diners,” another man complained.
