A man was arrested, charged and convicted of assault after attacking his girlfriend with a hammer after she invited him to her home for drinks, prosecutors in the United Kingdom said.

Now, the man of Birmingham, who works as a cleaner, has been jailed for 10 years for attacking the young woman he befriended at her Winson Green home.

44-year-old Seyd Selym appeared before the Birmingham Crown Court, where he admitted wounding his 25-year-old friend at her Aberdeen Street home.

The man met his victim around a month before the attack, and on the day he assaulted her they happened to bump into each other in Handsworth.

They returned to her home to have a drink together before Selym attacked her with a claw hammer in the bedroom of the home.

The woman recalled how she asked to share a drink when Selym asked her if she wanted a fight. Seconds later, she blacked out after suffering a blow to the head.

She awoke with a serious head injury, before drifting in and out of consciousness for around 24 hours.

“This was a violent and vicious attack, during which Selym repeatedly rained blows on his friend’s head with a hammer. She sustained a fractured skull and a fractured finger,” Detective Sara Caldwell said.

The woman was eventually able to seek medical attention two days after the attack. Her friend took her to a hospital after allowing her to sleep off what he assumed to be a hangover.

It was only when she arrived at the hospital that the true extent of her serious injuries became known. Selym was later charged with wounding, and appeared before the Birmingham Crown Court where he entered a guilty plea.
