(Scroll down for video) A man was surprised to find his lost dog up for sale on Craigslist.

Authorities said that Jessica Brittany Colleran, 22, of Virginia, answered a “dog found” advertising on Craigslist, and claimed to be the owner of the dog.

Colleran picked up the dog and took the animal to a place in Portsmouth. She later put the dog up for sale on Craigslist.

Joshua King, the real owner of the dog named Nikita, was devastated when the dog escaped from his home on Saturday morning.

King said that his friend saw the original advertisement for the “dog found” on Craigslist. That night, the friend contacted the man who published it, saying he knew the owner.

However, the man told the friend of King, that someone had already claimed the dog, King said.

The man handed over the number of the woman who claimed the dog. King said that the number for the woman matched the number of the person posting a dog for sale.

King called the woman and set up a time to meet her in order to buy the dog.

He then called the police to be with him at the meeting. King said that police spoke with the woman while he took his dog back.

Colleran has been charged with obtaining property under false pretenses. She is currently being held at the Chesapeake Correctional Center .

According to court documents, Colleran told an officer that she tried to sell the dog to get money for her legal fees in another case. Colleran has pending a charge of unlawful wounding in Portsmouth.
