(Scroll down for video) A family is grateful that their children were found alive after being buried in snow for several hours.

The two boys of New York, were trapped under several feet of snow for hours, after being accidentally buried by a snowplow, police said.

The children, Jason Rivera, 9, and Elijah Martinez, 11, were building a snow fort in a parking lot near their home in Newburgh, when the snowplow pushed snow on top of them, trapping them below.

Police said that the snowplow driver had no way of knowing that the boys were playing in the snow while he was clearing the road.

The boys, who are cousins, were trapped under 6 feet of snow for hours, in freezing temperatures. When the boys failed to come home about 10:00 p.m., the parents called police to report their disappearance.

Officials canvassed the apartment complex, knocked on doors and interviewed other children in the neighborhood.

They eventually learned that the cousins had been building the snow fort in the parking lot of a health center near the apartment complex.

The officers searched the area. One of them spotted a shovel sticking out of the snow. The officer started digging until he spotted a snow boot.

The officer called for help and the police, EMS workers and community members started digging for the boys.
The boys were found at about 2:00 a.m., and were taken to a hospital after suffering from exposure to the cold.
