A man was arrested, charged and convicted of attempted murder after stabbing his girlfriend because she dumped him, prosecutors in the United Kingdom said.

Now, a Birmingham court sentenced the man who was unable to accept that his relationship with his girlfriend was over, to 16 years in prison.

32-year-old Leon Harrison of Swinford Road in Selly Oak, repeatedly stabbed the 33-year-old woman, who was in the early stages of pregnancy, when she agreed to meet him in Stirchley so he could see their other child.

Harrison stabbed the woman four times in the chest, arm and leg. One of the wounds pierced a cardiac vessel, requiring open heart surgery.

At the time of the attack, their nine-month-old daughter was in her mother’s car. Following the stabbing, Harrison went on the run for two days before turning himself in to the police.

Harrison pleaded guilty to attempted murder, and he was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 16 years.
