A woman was arrested on charges of animal torture after allegedly slashing her dog with a blade in order to gain access to painkillers, police in Kentucky said.
23-year-old Heather Pereira admitted to cutting her 4-year-old Golden Retriever three times in hopes of getting Tramadol, a narcotic pain reliever.
Police launched an investigation when Pereira took her dog to the Jefferson County Animal Hospital for treatment, and again to the Elizabethtown Animal Hospital.
When she returned to Elizabethtown Animal Hospital for a second time, a veterinarian became suspicious of the dog’s injuries.
Pereira was arrested and charged with three counts of torturing a cat or a dog and three counts of attempting to obtain a controlled substance by misrepresentation.
She is being held in the Hardin County Detention Center, on bail of $5,000.
