Police are investigating a horrific car crash that left 10 people dead.
The incident took place in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Police said that the driver of a van was trying to pass a slow moving car.
The van became unstable and flew down an embankment.
The driver of the van, 37-year-old Khethabakhe Zikhali, was rushing a 9-year-old child to a hospital. The child was accompanied by relatives and friends. Most of them died in the car accident.
Hospital spokesperson Robert McKenzie said that ten people died in the crash that unfolded at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday. Five victims were from the same family.
The 9-year-old child who was being transported to the hospital, was also among the dead.
The investigation revealed that road conditions were not a factor in the accident. However, the poor condition of the van may have contributed to the accident. Police said that the van did not pass government inspection.
