A police officer was arrested and charged after being accused of having a sexual relationship with a teen girl, prosecutors in California said.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said that the former Irwindale Police Department officer pleaded no contest to sexually molesting a 14-year-old girl and sending suggestive text messages to another girl, both of whom were in the police department’s Explorer Program.
28-year-old Daniel Camerano pleaded no contest to three felony counts, including using a minor for sex acts, oral copulation of a person under 16 and contact with minor for sexual offense.
Camerano, who was an advisor to the department’s Explorer Program, had a sexual relationship with the 14-year-old girl that lasted for more than a year.
The eight-year veteran also admitted to sending sexually suggestive text messages to a 17-year-old female Explorer. Camerano resigned from the Irwindale Police Department after the allegations were made public.
The defendant pleaded as part of a plea bargain deal with prosecutors. Under terms of the plea settlement, Camerano will be sentenced to two years and eight months in state prison.
He will also be ordered to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
