A man was arrested after calling police to his home to report a burglary.
Police in Fort Myers, Florida, responded to a burglary at the home of 19-year-old Joshline Cob.
Cob told police that his 70-inch wide TV was stolen from his apartment. During the initial investigation, officers discovered that Cob was renting the television from a local shop on Cleveland Boulevard.
Cob went on to show officers marks on the front door and an unsecured sliding glass door, which were possible points of entry for the thief.
The officers completed the investigation by processing the scene for evidence and surveyed the area for potential witnesses. The case was assigned to a property crimes detective for further investigation.
During the subsequent investigation, detectives learned that Cob gave the television to a neighbor to hold at his apartment while Cob fraudulently reported the theft.
“This crime is something we’ve seen many times. People rent an item, make some payments and then report it stolen in an attempt to avoid making the remaining payments,” said property crimes detective Jimmy Hernandez.
Cob was arrested for filing a false police reports.
