(Scroll down for video) A man was arrested, charged and convicted of child abuse after chaining his young son to a bed while being out of the house for work, prosecutors in Utah said.
Now, 29-year-old Sammie Hodges of Logan, has been sentenced to spend 30 days in jail, 30 days of house arrest and was ordered to complete 80 hours of community service.
Hodges was charged with four counts of child abuse after police entered his house and found his 7-year-old son chained to a bed.
The chain was locked around the child’s ankle and the other end was locked around the bed. However, the chain was long enough so that the child was able to get to a bathroom and within reach of food and water.
Hodges told investigators that he chained his child in order to keep him safe during the absence.
Hodges will also be required to complete anger management and parenting classes, and comply with the orders of the Division of Children and Families.
The child has been in foster care since his father’s arrest.
Hodges currently enjoys unsupervised visits with his child, and will be allowed to have overnight visits by the end of the month.
