A man was arrested, charged and convicted of manslaughter after killing his much younger wife because he erroneously believed that she was sleeping around with men, prosecutors in the United Kingdom said.

Now, Harijinder Pal was sentenced to a hospital detention under the Mental Health Act 1983, for killing his wife Kulvir Kaur, in their home in Southall.

Pal was arrested following the killing, but was deemed unfit to stand trial. A recent assessment of his mental health led to him being deemed fit to stand trial.

He was brought before the Central Criminal Court, where he pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the basis of diminished responsibility.

Kaur, 21, and Pal, 34, had an arranged marriage in India. A year after their marriage, the couple moved to England. Kulvir worked for a linen cleaning company in Southall.

The married couple lived in a house with a family friend and his nephew. One day, Pal strangled Kulvir with a ligature.

Medical experts concluded that at the time of the killing, Pal was suffering schizoid affective disorder, which meant that he had delusional jealousy with no basis in fact.

This was agreed in court by both the prosecution and the defense.

“Only 16 days after moving in together, Kulvir was strangled to death in her bed by Pal. He claimed that his motivation for the killing was his belief that his wife had been having affairs with other men. These allegations were completely untrue and unfounded. The allegations caused great distress to Kulvir’s family and have had a significant impact on their lives. I hope that Pal’s conviction and sentence provides some comfort to them,” Baljit Ubhey, Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS London, said.
