A father was arrested and ordered to spend time in jail after his son was found chained to his bed.
The man of Utah, pleaded guilty to child abuse charges after he chained his son to his bed while he went to work because he was unable to afford a nanny.
Sammie Hodges, 29, was sentenced to 30 days in jail, 30 days of house arrest and 80 hours of community service.
Hodges was charged with four counts of child abuse after police entered his house after being tipped off about the situation. They found the 7-year-old child chained to the bed with a long chain.
Police said that the chain, which had a padlock around the boy’s ankle with the other end around his bedstead, was long enough for the child to get to a bathroom, and to reach food and water.
Hodges’ lawyer, Dave Perry, said that his client chained the boy inside the home to keep the child safe and keep him from running around the neighborhood during the absence of his father.
Hodges admitted that “it was just a stupid thing to do.”
While prosecutors recommended 120 days of house arrest with an ankle monitor, Judge Brandon Maynard sentenced Hodges to 30 days of jail time because he felt that there should be some punishment involved.
The jail time will be followed by 30 days of house arrest. He will also be required to complete community service, take anger management and parenting classes, and comply with the direction of the Division of Children and Families.
Hodges was allowed to reunite with his son, who has been in foster care since his arrest. Hodges currently enjoys unsupervised visits, and will be allowed overnight visits before he reports to jail.
