(Scroll down for video) A young boy will spend the next 10 years behind bars after he shot and killed his father.

The 14-year-old boy from Denver, Colorado, admitted to shooting his father before calling his father’s boss and saying that his father was too sick to go work.

Kai Kelly, who was 13 years old at the time of the murder, called his father’s boss for five days to say that his father was ill before the boss became suspicious and called police.

Police went to the home where the father and son lived, and found the man’s body in the home. The father, Joseph Kelly, 50, has reportedly been dead for 6 days before his body was found.

He was found with two gunshot wounds to the head, which was fired from a .22 caliber rifle.

The boy’s mother, who is divorced from her husband, did not live at the residence, according to police.

Kai Kelly was sentenced to 10 years in prison after he
pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and criminal extortion attempt, Eagle County District Attorney Bruce Brown said in a statement.

Under a plea agreement reached with prosecutors, the boy will serve 7 years in juvenile detention for the murder and three years in adult prison for the extortion charge.
