A man was arrested on charges of murder after killing his wife and daughter, police in Australia said.
The Auckland High Court convicted Ishrat Malik of murdering his wife, Farhat Rana Malik, and his daughter Sidra Noor Malik, after pleading guilty to murder.
Malik had claimed that he suffers from mental health issues and cannot be held responsible for the murders. However, three mental health professionals found Malik competent to stand trial.
One doctor however, concluded that Malik had a narcissistic personality disorder, meaning that he would not be able to take part in the trial, but he agreed that the defendant was exaggerating his mental health issues.
Moore ruled that Malik’s behavior was an attempt to avoid taking responsibility for the murder of his wife and daughter.
Justice Moore found that if Malik did not participate in the judicial process it was because he chose not to, and not because of any mental health condition.
The court was told that Malik called police to his home before the murder. During the call Malik yelled: “murder, murder, murder,” before hanging up the phone.
When police arrived at the scene, they found his wife and his adult daughter stabbed to death.
