A babysitter was arrested, charged and convicted of sexual assault after being caught sexually assaulting a young girl, prosecutors in New York said.
Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., announced that 47-year-old Norberto Torres, was sentenced to serve 25 years in state prison and 25 years of post-release supervision for sexually assaulting the 5-year-old girl while in his care.
Torres pleaded guilty in New York Supreme Court to one count each of Criminal Sexual Act, Attempted Criminal Sexual Act, and Sexual Abuse, all in the First Degrees.
“Norberto Torres committed despicable acts against a defenseless little girl, who was entrusted to his care,” said District Attorney Vance.
“Now, thanks in large part to the bravery of the victim and her family in coming forward, he will serve many years in prison,” Vance said.
According to the police investigation, Torres was entrusted with the caring for the 5-year-old girl from the afternoon through the next morning.
During that time, Torres sexually assaulted the child, who disclosed the abuse to her mother soon after Torres returned her to her custody.
At the time of the sexual assault, Torres was on parole for murdering a nun, Sister Virginia Thomann, in a shelter in the Bronx.
