(Scroll down for video) A man woke up during his own funeral moments before being set on fire by his family.

The “dead” grandfather came back to life moments before his family set him on fire on a funeral pyre in India.

Deepak Singh, 72, collapsed at his home in the city of Bhilwada, Rajasthan, in front of his horrified family after he went to feed their cows.

The man’s grandson, Banda Nalwa, 26, said that the family called a doctor, who confirmed that the old man was dead.

The family prepared the funeral pyre and began singing loudly according to their traditions. The loud noise caused the old man to wake up.

In accordance with the Hindu religion, the family began to prepare the pyre, which is a heap of combustible material especially one for burning a corpse, as part of the funeral ceremony.

Then the Singh family gathered around him and began their death wail, which is the usual goodbye ritual to a loved one.

“As the noise of the wailing became louder I suddenly saw my grandfather move. At first, I thought it was my imagination, but he then opened his eyes,” Nalwa said.

Realizing his mistake, Nalwa and his uncle Gulshan, 56, quickly helped their grandfather get up from the pyre.

Nalwa said that they are grateful that they had not set him on fire before he opened his eyes.
