A cruise ship employee was arrested on charges of sexual assault after allegedly grabbing the private parts of a sleeping woman, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in New Jersey said.
25-year-old Karan Seechurn of Mauritius, who is responsible for restocking the minibars in guest rooms, groped the sleeping passenger and then threatened to burn the ship if she reported the incident to the police.
Seechurn was arrested early Saturday, after the ship arrived in Bayonne, New Jersey. During his first court appearance, Seechurn was remanded into custody after being denied bail.
According to the investigation, the attack occurred when Seechurn used his key to get into the woman’s room without her knowledge.
When she awoke, she found Seechurn touching her private parts. She managed to push him off her. The suspect then threatened to burn down the ship if she reports the attack.
The woman managed to escape and immediately reported the incident. Seechurn faces up to three years in prison and up to a $250,000 fine if convicted of sexual assault.
