(Scroll down for video) A bride was determined not to allow her former fiance to ruin her happiness after he broke up with her days before the wedding.

Shelby Swink, 23, of Tennessee, was preparing for her wedding day when she was to marry her boyfriend of three years.

However, five days before the wedding, her fiance sat her down and told her that he did not love her anymore and that he does not want to spend the rest of his life with her.

Swink and her boyfriend met three years ago, when both were athletes at the University of Tennessee.

Swink said that she poured her heart and soul into the wedding plans and was shocked by the turn of events.

When she called her wedding photographer Elizabeth Hoard, she suggested that they do a “trash the dress” photo shoot as a way of celebrating her new beginning.

Swink said that she thought it was a crazy idea at first, especially since her mother spent a lot of money on the dress and alterations. However, the more she thought about the idea the more she loved it.

Her friends and family were very supportive and agreed to join her in trashing the dress, and her father trashed his tuxedo.

Swink did not let her former fiance ruin her happiness. Swink, her parents and bridesmaids covered one another in paint and feathers as Hoard took photos of the special moment.

“The moment the paint hit my dress I was free. All the disappointment, all the hurt, I just felt it leave me. I can’t even describe how liberating the experience was for me. I let go of all the hurt and became myself again,” Swink said.

The wedding dress is now on display at Barefoot Bride in Memphis, where she bought the dress.
