Jewish community in China to celebrate traditional Passover seder for the first time

Jews in Kaifeng, China
By: Anav Silverman

An Israeli organization is preparing the Jewish community in China, for their first ever traditional Passover seder, the Tazpit News Agency reported.

In Kaifeng, members of the ancient Jewish community were recently heard singing V’hi She’amda in Hebrew, a traditional song from the Passover Haggadah, led by the Kaifeng community cantor, Ram, in preparation for their first Passover seder.

Nearly 100 members of the ancient Jewish community are expected to attend a first-of-its-kind traditional Passover seder that will take place next week, at the start of the holiday. The seder, which is being sponsored by the Jerusalem-based Shavei Israel organization, will be led by 28-year-old Tzuri (Heng) Shi, who made aliyah to Israel from Kaifeng a few years ago with the help of Shavei Israel.

As part of the preparations, Tzuri was sent to Kaifeng by the Shavei Israel organization with all the traditional Passover items including Passover Matzah, Kosher for Passover wine, traditional Charoset and horseradish, as well as Passover Haggadahs. The Haggadahs are in Hebrew and Chinese.

Historians believe that the first Jews settled in Kaifeng, which was one of China's imperial capitals, during the 8th or 9th century. They are said to have been Sephardic Jewish merchants from Persia or Iraq, who made their way eastward along the Silk Route and established themselves in the city with the blessing of the Chinese emperor.

Kaifeng also houses China’s oldest known synagogue. In 1163, Kaifeng's Jews built a large and beautiful synagogue, which was subsequently renovated and rebuilt on numerous occasions throughout the centuries.

At its peak, during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the Kaifeng Jewish community reached its height of 5,000 people with rabbis, synagogues and Jewish institutions. However, widespread intermarriage and assimilation, as well as the death of the community's last rabbi two centuries ago, brought about its demise by the middle of the 19th century.

The community was then forced to sell the synagogue and Torah scrolls. Nevertheless, many of the families sought to preserve their Jewish identity and pass it down to their descendants, who continued to observe various Jewish customs. Currently, there are estimated to be between 500 to 1,000 identifiable Jewish descendants in Kaifeng.

Former terrorist tells Palestinians they are suffering because of their terrible leaders

Dr. Tawfik Hamid
By: Aryeh Savir

(Scroll down for video) A former terrorist said that the Palestinians living in the West bank and Gaza, are suffering only because of their terrible leaders, the Tazpit News Agency reported.

Dr. Tawfik Hamid is a unique and solitary voice in the Islamic world.

He was a member of the militant al-Gama'a al-Islamiyya along with Dr. Ayman Al-Zawaherri, who later on became the second in command of al-Qaeda and now heads it.

He stresses that he never actually committed an act of violence. Dr. Hamid is currently a Senior Fellow and Chair for the Study of Islamic Radicalism at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies.

Dr. Hamid has a medical degree in internal medicine, and a master's degree in cognitive psychology and educational techniques. He writes that some twenty-five years ago, he recognized the threat of radical Islam and the need for a reformation based upon peaceful interpretations of classical Islamic texts.

Hamid believes that the real message of Islam has been hijacked by many people throughout history. Those people defamed Islam and portrayed it incorrectly.

He said that he started to preach in mosques to promote his message, and as a result, he became a target of Islamic militants, who threatened his life. Expressing his opinion on the peace accords between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, Dr. Hamid places the blame on the Palestinian leadership.

He stated that the Arabs' suffering must be acknowledged, but the source of their suffering is their own leadership. The PA leaders and Hamas are cynically and immorally using the Arabs' plight for political and religious gain.
"One million Arabs live in Israel with the Jews and they are not suffering like the Arabs who are actually controlled by the Arabs. To be honest, you have to say that the Palestinian suffering is because of their leadership, not because of Israel," Dr. Hamid said.

"The solution is in the hands of the Palestinians," he said. "They have to take the decision to stop the suffering of their people." He believes that the key to peace is for the Arabs to change their attitude towards Israel. “If they truly extend their hand in peace, all will be resolved,” he concluded.

Hungry donkey seen shopping for groceries at supermarket

Donkey walking into Tesco
By: Anika Rao

Supermarket shoppers fled in panic after a donkey suddenly walked into a store in the United Kingdom.

The donkey was photographed strolling through a Tesco Express located in Brockenhurst, Hampshire.

Charlie Lambeth took one picture and posted it on Twitter with the caption: “Only in Brockenhurst.” The animal entered through the front door as if nothing was unusual and began strolling through the aisles.

Sadly, before the animal was able to grab some apples and carrots, the store manager kicked it out of the premises. In September, a large black bear shockingly left a bar after a female bartender ordered it to leave.

We've all heard jokes that begin with someone who walks into a bar, but few of us would actually live through a story in which a black bear was the one coming into the bar. That's what happened in one Alaska hotel in downtown Juneau, when the large animal stumbled into the bar to the shock of employee Ariel Svetlik-McCarthy.

Instead of fleeing the scene, the brave waitress shouted, "No bear! Out! No! You cannot be here!" What happened next was unexpected as the beast quickly obeyed and left the bar.

State Biologist Ryan Scott said that although black bears had wandered into houses in the area before, it was rare for them to go into businesses. "I think it did very well, and it is good news that the bear obliged,” he said.

The owner of the bar, C Scott Fry, said the bear had entered as if it wanted a beer.

A teacher’s affair with her student became public after she got an STD from her student.

The drama teacher, who had an affair with the 16-year-old student, took him to a hotel during a weekend training course funded by her school.

While having sex with the student, the teacher, Kelly Burgess, 26, exchanged more than 12,000 texts with the teen in just seven months. Some of the texts included nude photos of the teacher.

The teacher of Newport, South Wales, learned that she had an STD, and asked the boy to get himself tested to see if she got it from him.

The relationship between the teacher and student was only discovered when the teen visited the clinic and told the nurse that he was having a love affair with his teacher, the Bristol Crown Court was told.

When the nurse explained that she had to follow protocol and report the inappropriate relationship, the teen panicked and attempted to rescind his statement.

However, the teacher was arrested and pleaded guilty to abuse of position of trust and sexual activity with a child.

The teacher walked free after she was sentenced to 10 months imprisonment suspended for two years. She was also banned from ever teaching again.

Burgess was also handed a two year supervision order and ordered to register as a sex offender.

The judge told the teacher that her parents sacrificed a lot for her education so that she can realize her dreams of becoming a teacher, and now she ruined it all as she will never be able to teach again.

(Scroll down for video) Police have busted a group of about 100 teenagers, who were uploading inappropriate selfies to the Internet.

It all began when a man was horrified when he found that his daughter had uploaded a nude photo of herself on the Internet.

Police in Virginia, learned that she was part of a ring of girls, who upload nude photos and videos of themselves.
Officers found that most of the girls are between 14 and 15 years old.

Authorities said that the teens involved are probably unaware that they have broken child pornograghy laws, which prohibits the transmission of sexually explicit photographs of minors.

The girls might not understand the severity of the actions, as they can never remove it from the Internet and they have no idea who sees the images and videos.

Officials found more than 1,000 sexually explicit photos and videos that were shared over the group’s private Instagram accounts.

Police have so far seized cellphones from 23 people in connection to the bust.

Meredith Powell
By: Sanvi Rizvi

(Scroll down for video) A teacher was arrested after a girl showed them a letter that the teacher wrote.

In the letter, the 24-year-old teacher apologized for having a relationship with the girl’s boyfriend, who is underage.

However, Meredith Powell of Tacoma, Washington, seemed to have been busy in school. She was doing more than just teaching math.

A fourth student came forward telling police that he had sex with Powell in return for raising his grades. As we reported earlier, who doesn't like a hot teacher?

Sitting in school can be boring, but when there is a hot teacher present, things get more interesting. However, some female teachers cross the line and then they end up on the wrong side of the law.

Meredith Powell, 24, of Tacoma, Washington, is one of those teachers. The 24-year-old high school teacher has allegedly admitted to performing sex acts on several students, inside her classroom.

The students were between 15 and 16 years old. Powell is also accused of sending photos of herself in the bathtub to one student.

Powell, a math teacher at Lincoln High School, pleaded not guilty on Friday, to two counts of third-degree child rape and one count of communicating with a minor for immoral purposes. The teacher’s actions became known after she wrote a letter to the girlfriend of one of her victims.

In the letter, which was turned over to police, Powell apologized for her promiscuous and unprofessional actions. Powell was arrested and was later released from the Pierce County Jail on her own recognizance.

For now, the school placed Powell on leave without pay.

Two men who loved one woman, decided to make peace after the woman died.

Anne Motteram of the United Kingdom, was married to Mark Motteram, 45, and had three children with him, Luke, 16, Toni, 13, and Ben, 8.

Mark Motteram also helped raise her two older children from a previous relationship, as his own.

After Anne Motteram and her husband Mark, were separated for about 5 years, she then began a relationship with Steve Cook, 37, and had one daughter with him.

Sadly, Anne Motteram suffered a fatal heart attack at her home in Southampton, several days after turning 40 years old.

The men who both loved Anne Motteram, and her children decided to put their differences behind so that they could raise all the children together.

Mr. Cook and Mr. Motteram did well raising the unconventional family for a while, but then the animosity between them became too great, the Winchester Crown Court heard.

The two went their separate ways, and began a bitter custody battle when Mr. Cook wanted to move out of town with his daughter, 4-year-old Catalina.

Mr. Cook moved to Derby, where he won custody of his daughter, while Motteram won visitation rights. Mr. Cook was ordered to take the child for four holidays a year to Southampton so she can see her siblings.

When Cook dropped off his daughter for the first visit he went straight to the Southampton Central police station where he told officers that he had concerns about the welfare of the children.

Mr. Cook claimed that Motteram had a stash of drugs in the house and that there was no food in the house, the court heard.

Police raided the property, where they found lots of healthy food and a full freezer, and there were no signs of drugs.

The false accusation angered Mr. Motteram, who armed himself with a 4 inch kitchen knife, and when Mr. Cook came to pick up his daughter at the end of the week he was stabbed him in the chest.

Cook was taken to a hospital where he was treated for the non life-threatening stab wound. Motteram was jailed.

He was recently sentenced to 4 years in prison for the crime. An attempted murder charge however, was dropped.

Motteram said that he was remorseful and wished he had never stabbed the man as his family enjoyed spending time with Catalina and she was well cared for in his home.

A rare disease is causing a woman to smell of fish and rotten eggs, doctors in the United Kingdom said.

Ellie James complains of constantly receiving soaps, body sprays and perfumes as gifts.

She knew that she was given the gifts as a hint. James said that she has endured humiliation for 14 years because she suffers from a rare medical disorder that makes her smell of fish. She sometimes also smells of rotten eggs.

James, 44, courageously reveals how she is just one of a handful of British citizens suffering with TMAU. The disease, also known as fish odor syndrome, has had a devastating impact on her life.

Bullies have nicknamed her Smelly Ellie. James sometimes takes baths five times a day. 14 years ago, when the smell first began, she thought that her cat is causing the stench.

However, eventually she realized that she was smelling after people began looking at her while holding their noses. She also saw people whispering about her in the office where she worked.

So far, there is no cure for this disease. James also reported that she found love with her boyfriend Dan Molston, 50.

Judge awards woman $53,000 engagement ring after she was dumped via text message

Diamond ring
By: Hydar Tomar

A man dumped his fiancee with a text message and then sued her to get her $53,000 engagement ring back.

Louis Billittier Jr., 53, who owns Chef's restaurant in Buffalo, New York, ended a 14 month engagement via text after she allegedly refused to sign a prenuptial agreement.

He then sued his much younger fiancee, 38-year-old Christa M. Clark, for her 2.97 carat diamond ring.

However, she claimed that the ring was a parting gift.

Under the law, the courts generally side with the groom in disputes over engagement rings. Legally, the groom is entitled to the ring even if he was the one calling off the wedding.

However, Clark had text messages to prove that Billittier told her that the ring was a gift.

When Clark received the text message from her fiance saying that he was breaking up with her, she responded: “You're doing this through text message?” The man responded by saying: “you get a $50,000 parting ring, enough for a down payment on a house.”

Weeks after ending their engagement, Billittier began threatening Clark via text messages that he will take back the ring if she continued to insult him following the
breakup.

Judge Russell P. Buscaglia ruled that the ring became a gift, and was no longer part of a contract for marriage, and when he threatened to take the ring back it further proved that it was a gift.

A man was jailed after he was found guilty of harassing his former girlfriend by hiding under her bed.

Kevin Rainbow, 28, of Deptford, London, England, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for stalking his former girlfriend.

Mr. Rainbow wanted to get back with his former girlfriend, with whom he has two children. Rainbow had lived with his former girlfriend for five years, but they broke up after he allegedly became increasingly abusive and controlling.

He began stalking the 31-year-old woman. After Rainbow would not stop bothering the woman, she took out an order of protection against him.

Despite that, Rainbow continued to stalk her. One day, when the woman came to her apartment, she saw that her children’s father was in his car, which he parked in her parents’ driveway in Sussex.

The woman’s father came to her assistance and called police, but by the time they arrived, Rainbow was nowhere to be found.

As officers were taking statements from the family, they heard a noise from an upstairs bedroom and Rainbow was found hiding under the woman’s bed.

Rainbow was charged with harassment, common assault and criminal damage. “I consider you to be a dangerous individual and suggest a high risk of further damage, both physical and emotional, to your former partner. It is clear that you do not accept the end of the relationship,” Judge Barnes said.

In addition to the prison sentence, the judge also imposed a restraining order, indefinitely banning Rainbow from contacting his former girlfriend or her family except through lawyers on issues regarding access to his two children.

Teacher walks free despite having an affair with boy for seven months

Kelly Burgess
By: Anika Rao

A drama teacher was arrested, charged and convicted of child sexual assault after having an affair with one of her students, prosecutors in the United Kingdom said.

Now, a judge has sentenced the teacher to a suspended sentence, and she walked out of court a free woman.

According to the police investigation, Kelly Burgess, 26, had a seven-month relationship with the child, aged between 16 and 17 at the time, while working as his drama teacher. The couple met at school every day.

They exchanged hundreds of text messages, many of them explicit, as well as nude photographs. The Bristol Crown Court has heard how Burgess of Newport, Gwent, took the boy, now 18, along for trips at least twice.

On one occasion, the student accompanied Burgess to a teacher’s training course in Warwick, where the couple had sex in a hotel paid for by the school. Their relationship was exposed when Burgess took the child to a sexual health clinic after developing symptoms of a sexually transmitted disease.

During the visit to the clinic, the child told a nurse that he was having a relationship with his 25-year-old teacher. The nurse reported the incident to police and Burgess was arrested.

She initially denied the allegations, but eventually pleaded guilty to four offenses of sexual abuse of trust and engaging in a sexual act with a child. Judge Euan Ambrose sentenced Burgess to 10 months in prison, suspended for two years.

She was also ordered supervised release for two years.

Jumbo jet forced to make emergency landing after 400 cows overheat cabin

A Boeing 747 jumbo jet was forced to make an emergency after several hundred cows on board overheated the cabin triggering fire alarms.

The incident occurred as the jumbo jet was flying over the Irish Sea, where an alarm started ringing to warn the cockpit of a seemingly catastrophic heat in the cabin.

The cabin contained 390 cows. The pilot sent a distress signal and was allowed to land at Heathrow Airport, in London, England.

However, when the technicians inspected the plane they found no evidence of fire or even smoke. Cows emit large amounts of methane and maintain temperature slightly higher than the human body.

In January, a barn was badly damaged after cows farted too much, fire officials in Germany said. Hesse State Police said that the dairy cows blew the roof off their barn when the methane released by the animals caused an explosion.

According to the initial investigation, a static electric charge caused the blast and fire on Monday. The roof was damaged and one cow suffered minor burns. No people were injured.

90 cows were kept in the barn and it was unclear why the methane had accumulated. Belching and flatulence releases large amounts of gas.

The man of the United Kingdom, was sentenced to 4 months in prison with a 12 month suspended sentence.

Lee Hawkes, 35, of Swansea, was also ordered to register as a sex offender after stealing nude photos from phones of unsuspecting women.

Police raided his shop and found 48 images of women in their twenties in a number of different nude poses. There were 135 sexually explicit images of women in their thirties.

Hawkes transferred the images from the women’s phones to his own phone. He also downloaded them to his personal computer, the Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court heard.

Hawkes persuaded at least one of the women to invest in a new phone. He then transferred the contents from the phone to the woman’s new phone and to his own phone, according to Prosecutor Rachel Knight.

He put the images on his own phone before transferring them to his computer. Hawken later showed the nude images from the customers to a coworker, who notified the police and he was arrested.
