Israeli experts give injured turtle new hope with one of a kind prosthetic fin

Hofesh also known as Freedom turtle
By: Aarav Sen

(Scroll down for video) An injured turtle can now move around on its own thanks to an Israeli medical team that provides it with a prosthetic fin.

The prospects of the wounded sea turtle are improving, thanks to the new prosthetic fin designed and implanted by the Israeli team.

The fin was modeled as the wings of a U.S. fighter jet. The green turtle named Hofesh, which is the Hebrew word for freedom, was caught in a fishing net off the Mediterranean coast.

The turtle’s two left fins were seriously damaged, and rescuers had to amputate them, leaving it unable to swim. Shlomi Gez, a student of industrial design at Hadassah University in Jerusalem, read about the animal through the Internet, and wanted to help.

He designed a prosthesis based on the dorsal fin of a fish. The fin provided some improvement, but Hofesh still had trouble breathing and surfacing.

Then, inspired by the design of Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor fighter jet, he designed a new prosthesis with two fins. The device, similar to the wings of the aircraft, was tied to the back of Hofesh on Thursday, allowing it to easily move around.

Gez said that the turtle is about 23 years old, and it spends its days with a blind female turtle.

(Scroll down for video) The Israeli government and its citizens are preparing for the historic visit of Pope Francis later this month, the Tazpit News Agency reported.

The Israel Ministry of Tourism is investing approximately 10 million shekels ($2.9 million) in marketing initiatives and infrastructure projects to prepare the country for the visit of Pope Francis.

The marketing investment is centered around the dedicated website for the Catholic Pilgrim (www.holyland-pilgrimage.org), including live streaming of the Pope’s visit and utilization of the most advanced online marketing tools, both on the web and on the various social media platforms.

The marketing targets countries known for Catholic pilgrimage, including the U.S., Brazil, Italy, Spain, Poland, Germany and France.

Last month, the Tourism Ministry ran an online Instagram promotion in advance of the Papal visit, where contestants from around the world were asked to upload a 15-second video on Instagram, sharing with the Tourism Ministry why they wanted to visit the Holy Land. The winning video was uploaded by Gustavo Aldolfo Franco Picaza from Venezuela, and he landed a free trip to Israel.

The 22-year-old Venezuelan with the winning Instagram message will visit Israel later this week, as a guest of the Israel Tourism Ministry.

Hundreds of journalists are expected to arrive from around the world to cover the event, and the Ministry of Tourism will be offering support and hosting services to them.

Israeli Tourism Minister Dr. Uzi Landau, stated that Israel will welcome the Pope with open arms. "We welcome the Pope as a visitor of the highest importance, the most important religious leader for Catholics around the world. We are greatly honored by his choice to visit Israel. We will continue to welcome the faithful with open arms, as they choose to visit Israel in the footsteps of the Pope.”

The Tourism Ministry, which invests in the maintenance and conservation of Christian sites on an ongoing basis, has invested tens of millions of shekels in recent years in the development and infrastructure of Christian sites, including the Yardenit baptism site on the River Jordan, the Sea of Galilee trail and promenade, Mount of Olives, Via Dolorosa, Ein Karem and pilgrimage routes in Jerusalem, Nazareth and more. Improvements and upgrading in the area of Rachel's Crossing and at the Room of the Last Supper that had been planned for later in the year, have been carried out in advance of the Pope's visit.

As a result of the visit to the Holy Land by Pope Francis, who is a popular and significant figure for the world's 1.2 billion Catholics, the ministry estimates an increase of tens of thousands in the numbers of Christians visiting Israel. Christian tourism, which accounts for about 60% of all incoming tourism, is expected to increase by about 10% in 2014 as a result of the pope’s visit.

Orthodox Jewish Nahal Haredi soldier reunited with his Catholic mother and sister during graduation ceremony

Diego Tapia with his mother and sister
By: Aryeh Savir

A Catholic man who converted to Judaism and joined the Israel Defense Forces, was reunited with his mother and sister during a graduation ceremony in Israel, the Tazpit News Agency reported.

Corporal Diego Tapia, 28, is not your typical IDF soldier. He was born a Catholic in Bogota, Colombia. Recently, Diego discovered Judaism during his research in university, he converted and immigrated to Israel. After completing three years of study in a yeshiva in Jerusalem, he enlisted in the IDF.

Last Wednesday, was in extremely unique and moving day for Diego. He has concluded his training phase in the IDF and was to be awarded the coveted Warrior's Pin. This in itself is an exciting moment, but the Nahal Haredi association, which accompanies Diego's unit, was not content with a simple ceremony.

They decided to fly in Diego's mother, Mercedes, and his sister, whom he had not seen for six years since leaving for Israel, for the ceremony. They wanted Diego to be like all the other soldiers, accompanied at the ceremony by his family. In less than a day's notice his mother and sister took the 20 hour flight from Bogota to Tel Aviv, so that they could stand beside Diego during the ceremony.

At some point during the ceremony one of the soldiers' commanding officers took the stage and gave the signal to bring in the entourage from Colombia. With a shy smile and accompanied by the unit's soldiers, the mother and sister entered the hall, and all burst into tears. Not a Single eye was left dry during the reunion, and the soldier and his mother could hardly part.

"The embraces between the son and mother left no dry eye in the entire hall," said Rabbi David Fuchs, one of the Nahal Haredi rabbis. "This was one of the most exciting occasions in my life."

Mercedes, Diego's mother, added that she was happy, and it was a great surprise. "The sentiments I experienced here were of immense joy and much excitement, and I was surprised to see him looking so official," she said, relating to his uniform.

Diego's life story is extraordinary. After graduating from high school he began studying at the university. "We learned a lot of science, like mathematics and physics, and philosophy. I felt that something was missing, answers I could not find in my religion at the time, Christianity," he said. "I love to read and learn, ask questions and seek answers, so I started exploring different religions and cultures such as the Japanese and Chinese cultures, and Buddhism."

During his search, Diego came across "The Kuzari" by Rabbi Yehuda Halevi. The book is considered one of the pillars of Jewish philosophy, which describes the foundations of Judaism. Diego felt that he had found what he was looking for.

He decided to convert to Judaism, starting the process in Colombia and continuing for another three years at Machon Meir in Jerusalem. "In Colombia, it is hard to be a Jew and especially difficult to convert in particular, so I decided to come to Israel," said Diego. In 2011, he graduated from the yeshiva, received an Israeli identity card and was recognized as a new immigrant.

After being recognized as an Israeli citizen, Diego decided to take another step into Israeli society. "I felt I needed to do something to be worthy of the new citizenship I received. I wanted to contribute to the country and decided to enlist, like everyone else," he said. Diego joined the IDF voluntarily.

Diego and his comrades concluded their training phase and were awarded the desirable Warrior Pin. "We hope to have many more people like Diego. He is very determined, demonstrating physical and mental courage and thus inspires his unit members. We, as his commanders, appreciate him very much as well," said his commanding officer, Lieutenant commander Omri Shoshani.

Republican congressmen and their families visit Jewish settlements in the West Bank

Andy Harris and Ron DeSantis (right)
By: Anav Silverman

Several Republican congressmen and their families visited Jewish settlement communities in the West Bank, the Tazpit News Agency reported.

Since last summer, 16 U.S. congressmen have toured Judea and Samaria including two recent visitors, Andy Harris (R-Maryland) and Ron DeSantis (R-Florida), who toured the region with the Yesha Council on a Yes! Israel Mission.

The two members of the U.S. House of Representatives and their wives visited Gush Etzion, Efra, Hebron, the South Hebron Hills, Jordan Valley, Ariel, Samaria, and the Binyamin Regional Council.

Harris told the Tazpit News Agency that the tour of Judea and Samaria was eye-opening. “We met with Israeli residents who just want to live their lives, to coexist with their neighbors,” Harris said. “They want to leave politics out of it. It was impressive to see how these communities actually function and how well they get along with their surrounding communities. Hundreds of thousands of people live in peace in this region, and only the few that are in conflict get mainstream media coverage,” Harris told the Tazpit News Agency.

“We came here to learn – you can’t have 465 congressmen visiting the region at the same time,” joked Harris. “We will bring back the message to Congress: you have to look beyond headlines to understand what’s going on, and consider the cultural and historical context of what’s happening.”

Harris, who served as a physician at the John Hopkins Hospital and as a Naval Reserve medical officer, visited Israel last August and said that he didn't have the opportunity to visit Judea and Samaria on the previous visit. “It was a pleasure to visit those areas this time around,” he said.

DeSantis added that pushing Israel to 1967 borders was unacceptable. “When you stand on a skyscraper in Tel Aviv and you see just how close everything is, it makes the reality much more clear. The U.S. is separated by large oceans from those who want to harm its citizens – Israel’s enemies are hilltops away,” said DeSantis, a Harvard law graduate, who was an active duty serviceman and served in Iraq as an adviser to a U.S. Navy SEAL commander.

The pre-1967 borders entailed a mere nine-mile wide waistline across Israel’s coastal strip and a security border of 223 miles, an area that is considered virtually impossible to defend in an advent of war and rocket fire.

According to Dani Dayan, Chief Foreign Envoy of the Yesha Council, such visits are critical to understanding the region.

"The Members of Congress were able to see the reality in Judea and Samaria without the distorting effect of biased intermediaries like the international media and anti-Israeli propaganda. What they saw was for them a life changing experience,” Dayan told the Tazpit News Agency.

Dayan, a businessman who immigrated to Israel from Argentina in 1971, was the Chairman of the Yesha Council for six years.

“The dozens of members of Congress who visited Judea and Samaria during the last couple of years, will no doubt change the discourse on the Hill about the Jewish communities in the area," said Dayan.

The man told a judge that he no longer wanted to be a father despite the fact that he willingly donated the sperm when the two were together.

Karla Dunston, 42, of Chicago, Illinois, was diagnosed with lymphoma four years ago. Knowing that chemotherapy would leave her infertile, she had embryos frozen before treatment.

Her then boyfriend, Jacob Szafranski, happily provided the sperm. However, when they separated a year later, Szafranski changed his mind and decided that he no longer wanted children.

Szafranski was willing to allow his former girlfriend to use the embryos on the condition that his hospital records be destroyed and there would be no way to trace the child back to him, but the hospital refused his request, leading to a lengthy court battle.

A Cook County judge granted custody of the embryos to Dunston. The judge said that the desire to have a biological child in the face of the impossibility of having one without using these embryos outweighs Szafranski's privacy concerns.

Szafranski said that he will appeal the decision. Since the legal battle is taking so long, Dunston has since gone on to carry and give birth to a son, using a donor egg and donor sperm. However, she still wants a biological child.

Woman sues city for requiring a prescription to purchase adult toys

By: Hydar Tomar

(Scroll down for video) A woman who was told that she needed a prescription before purchasing an adult toy, filed a lawsuit against the city of Sandy Springs, according to court documents filed in Georgia.

Lawmakers in Sandy Springs passed an ordinance that requires people to have a prescription or a scientific reason to buy a sexual device.

Melissa Davenport and her attorney, Gerry Weber, filed the lawsuit because they want the government out of their business.

In the claim, Davenport states that she suffers from multiple sclerosis. Davenport said that sex toys saved her marriage and that is the reason she filed the lawsuit.

The ordinance prohibits the sale of sexual devices unless customers have a medical, scientific, educational, legislative, judicial or law enforcement purpose. Experts interpret the law to mean that you need a doctor’s prescription in order to prove that you have a medical need for the device.

“The ordinance basically states that the government can stick their nose into your bedroom and say that you can use this but not that,” Weber said. Weber also said that the ordinance violates the due process clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, which provides for the right to privacy.

“People have the right to decide for themselves whether these devices help their intimate life, and the government has no reason to be in the bedroom and second guess that decision,” Weber said.

The city said that it will defend the ordinance. Davenport said that she is not seeking money, she just wants a judge to find the law unconstitutional.
