Brooklyn mothers who are looking for a comfortable place to breastfeed their babies, will now have a public facility on Fulton Street.

The first public breastfeeding station of Brooklyn opened on Tuesday.

Activists hope that the stigma of public nursing will stop, but meanwhile, the more places new mothers have to whip out their breasts the better. “As parents of six children, my wife and I understand how hard it is to find a clean and comfortable place to breastfeed a child in Brooklyn,” Councilman Robert Cornegy said.

“We also know that many mothers are ashamed to feed their children in public,” he added. The new breastfeeding station, which is located on Fulton Street, is equipped with chairs, pamphlets on breastfeeding and most importantly, a private area.

The room also doubles as a mom dairy, offering breast pumps and a fridge for mother to store their milk until they are ready to head home. “The breastfeeding station is really important,” supporters who came to the opening ceremony, said.

5,600 lone Israeli soldiers now have a home away from home

Lone soldiers at their home away from home
By: Roman Mokrinsky

(Scroll down for video) Thousands of lone Israeli soldiers now have the opportunity to spend their free time in a home away from home, the Tazpit News Agency reported.

There are some 5,600 lone soldiers currently serving in the IDF. 60 percent of them are new immigrants.

Being a lone soldier is not an easy task. Faced with the challenges every soldier contends with, lone soldiers have no family for support, no home for refuge when on furlough and are forced to cope on their own.

Who can they turn to for emotional support? Who will they spend the holidays with? Who will cheer for them when they are sworn in at the end of basic training? The Michael Levin Lone Soldier Center was established 5 years ago, with the objective of providing a home for these dedicated fighters.

The center provides a home and support to the 5,000 soldiers, who cannot go home to their parents. Five years ago, Jared White, Josh Flaster, and Tziki Aud, decided to launch an organization that would provide lone soldiers with a place were they can turn to, offering guidance and support.

White and Flaster were themselves lone soldiers. “Michael Levin was a paratrooper serving in the 890th Battalion and was killed in the Second Lebanon War. I knew him. He was adopted by Tziki Aud. When we thought of the new organization we thought about a dedication. Therefore, the center is named after Mickey. He was part of the lone soldier’s family,” explains White.

White, 29, is a resident of Jerusalem, and is studying to become a teacher. After making aliyah, he enlisted in the IDF and served as a commander in the paratroopers. He currently heads the Jerusalem branch.

“During our first staff meeting everyone took out the money they had in their pockets. We had a total of 320 shekel. Today we are a nationwide organization,” Jared said proudly. The Center has branches in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Be'er Sheva, and Haifa, with 300 volunteers who help run them. Almost all of the organization’s members are former lone soldiers.

“A lone soldier doesn’t have the support of parents or family who can help with many issues. When you have family things like food and laundry are taken for granted. It’s hard to leave home. It’s even more difficult when you are a lone soldier facing the challenges of military service together with the regular demands of life. For the first time, you are on your own and have to manage,” points out veteran volunteer Michael Shapira.

Michael is a 28-year-old medical student at Hebrew University. He comes from California, and served in the Nahal Brigade. “I personally had it comparatively easy, because I lived on Kibbutz Maoz Chaim. Sometimes, it was really hard to come home on Friday, from a base far away when I had things to take care of. When I got back everything was closed and I didn't have a chance to do anything. I managed because I had a family that could help me. Many lone soldiers don’t have that kind of support. Therefore, it is very important that the organization serve as a support net for them,” Michael said.

“I began volunteering for the organization four years ago. I love the work and really believe in what we do. I constantly see soldiers entering their new life and we help them directly,” Dana Yatsiv, who helps with the accounting and budgeting, said.

Emigrating from California seven years ago, she is a business management and literature student at Hebrew University. “When I was a lone soldier I had to take care of everything on my own. I had a hard time with military bureaucracy. I didn’t know who to speak with. You can easily get lost in the IDF system and it can be very stressful. Our organization has advisors who can help the soldiers and speak with their commanders. There are people who can really fight for them,” Dana added.

The center has three divisions, consultation, moving and social activities. The organization works with the IDF, which helps fund its activities. White himself holds staff meetings with IDF officers.

The consultation department offers pre-enlistment consultation, offering guidance on military service, the various units and the unique status of the lone soldier. The department further assists soldiers who have been discharged to move smoothly into civilian life, helping them to decide what to do next.

The social activities department offers monthly based activities such as a BBQ, which usually hosts some 600 participants, movie night, trips, Shabbat, holiday and more.

“The most unique undertaking we have had was during Operation Pillar of Defense,” said White. “Many soldiers were mobilized from their bases to the field and did not have time to take warm clothing with them. Some of the lone soldiers I spoke to complained of the cold. We collected $24,000 in 24 hours and dispersed winter gear to the soldiers in the field, and this under a barrage of rockets,” he recalled.

“We had one soldier from Australia, who broke his leg while in the army. He came to us for money to buy food. He now gets food coupons from us. Furthermore, I invited him to bring his Playstation to the center. The center is like a home for everyone. Our objective is to show the lone soldiers that we are like family here,” White explained.

“As former lone soldiers we understand what they are going through and know the job. We are always ready to meet them or to be on the phone to help. Financial support of the soldiers is important, but our organization offers a family for the lone soldiers as well. We offer them a supportive environment. That is what they are really lacking, and we do all we can to give it to them,” concluded Shapira.

At the Michael Levin Lone Soldier Centers, every load of laundry, every hot meal, every discussion about the stresses of army life is strengthening the Israeli Defense Forces and the State of Israel.

Snake massage

(Scroll down for video) A massage parlor in the Philippines, is now offering free treatment with four 550 pound snakes for a total weight of 2,200 pounds.

Tourists in Cebu City Zoo, might think twice before taking the "treatment" when they see exactly what it implies.

Four giant Burmese pythons, which weigh 550 pounds each, glide on those who are brave enough to get comfortable with snakes on a bed made of bamboo. Pythons, named Michelle, Walter, EJ, and Daniel, are each given 10 chickens before the massage begins to help curb any hunger pains they might have.

“I was informed about what to do and what not to do during the massage. These instructions are crucial, as you can imagine. They tell you not to blow air into the snake, because this is like being pinched in the back. You cannot shout for help as the snake can feel the vibrations and thinks you are prey or a predator depending on the environment,” Ian Maclean of Hawaii, who has been massaged twice by the snakes, said.

The crawling movement of the snakes is said to be therapeutic and relaxing. “At first, customers feel fear, but after a few minutes they like it,” Giovanni Romarate, who overseen the treatment, said.

Mother found guilty of child abuse for allowing husband to shower with teenage daughter

A woman was charged and convicted of child abuse for allowing her husband to shower with her children.

The New Jersey woman appealed the case and attempted to prove her innocence.

However, the appeals court upheld the guilty verdict.

The mother, identified in court documents as Maureen R., lost her appeal of abuse and neglect of her 14-year-old daughter Darlene R., by allowing the father of the girl, Robert R., to shower with her.

According to the appellate decision, the Division of Youth and Family Services of New Jersey, began investigating the family after Maureen’s 15-year -old niece told her counselor that her uncle sexually abused her while living with the family for a short time.

During the investigation, the girl said that her uncle forced her to have sex with him on a few occasions, and also tried to convince her to join him in the shower.

The niece named Tara, said that it was normal practice for her uncle to shower with his own children, and for him to walk around naked.

When questioned, Darlene admitted that she showered with her father, but said that he never sexually abused her. “We just soaped and talked about the day,” she said.

Maureen said that she had no knowledge of Tara being sexually abused by her husband, but admitted to knowing that Robert took showers with all of their children since they were young.

Maureen said that the showers were “innocent” and that Robert “did not do anything inappropriate,” according to court documents.

In 2012, a judge ruled that Robert had sexually abused his niece, and both parents had abused the daughter, because he “showered with a developing teenager, weather it is your daughter or not, it is abuse,” the judge ruled.

The mother was convicted of child abuse because she “did not exercise a minimum degree of care to protect her daughter,” the judge added.

Maureen appealed the decision, saying that there was insufficient evidence of harm or proof of her daughter being in “imminent danger,” but the appeals court disagreed with her.

The appellate panel found that “a reasonable parent would perceive the risks inherent in the behavior here.”

“As a mother, Maureen had a fundamental duty to know and protect her children from potential risks in the environment, including those that may come from the other parent,” the ruling stated.

“Allowing a grown man to shower in the nude with a developing teenage girl creates a substantial risk of harm, not just of sexual abuse, but psychological damage to the child,” the court ruled.

By: Anika Rao

A young child is dead and her twin sister was hospitalized after they were starved by their parents.

19-year-old Markisha Jones, and 22-year-old Gene Edwards of Chicago, Illinois, should have been celebrating the first birthday of their twin daughters, Mia and Mya. Instead, they are in jail.

Mia celebrated her first birthday in foster care after spending months in a hospital, where she was nursed back from near death.

Her twin sister Mya, was not so lucky as she did not live long enough to have her first birthday.

After the twin girls were born they spent much of their time in a basement where they shared a crib. They wasted away while starving for nutrition and care, according to prosecutors in Cook County.

Five months after the birth, the parents stopped feeding the babies formula. Instead, they mixed baby cereal with water causing the babies to go hungry.

One day, Edwards noticed Mya was not breathing and called paramedics, who tried to revive the baby. The baby was only 7 months old and was undernourished.

Mya was pronounced dead at the house and Mia was rushed to a hospital. The Department of Children and Families subsequently took custody of Mia. She is now in a foster home.

The parents were charged with involuntary manslaughter and felony child abuse after an investigation by the office of the Cook County Medical Examiner concluded that the death of Mya was of malnutrition caused by starvation.

The parents are being held in jail in lieu of $250,000 each.
