A taxi driver was arrested, charged and convicted of rape after raping a woman he picked up in Williamsburg, prosecutors in New York said.

Now, the man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Kings County District Attorney Kenneth P. Thompson announced that convicted taxi driver Gurmeet Singh, who was found guilty of raping a female passenger, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Earlier this month, a jury found Singh guilty of Rape in the First Degree and Kidnapping in the Second Degree as a Sexually Motivated Felony. Brooklyn Supreme Court Judge Miriam Cyrulnik presided over sentencing.

“The defendant had a duty to drive a young woman home, but instead he brutally raped her at knifepoint. Today’s sentence ensures that this defendant will no longer be a threat to society or a danger to other unsuspecting women, and I only hope that the victim can find comfort and closure at this time,” said District Attorney Ken Thompson.

As presented at trial, Singh picked up the victim in Williamsburg, to drive her to her home in lower Manhattan. The victim fell asleep in the back seat of the cab by the time Singh reached her address.

He then drove her while she remained asleep to his personal vehicle in Williamsburg, and moved her to his car. When the victim awoke, the defendant was holding a knife to her throat, bound her arms and wrists with a scarf, stuffed her mouth with paper towels and blindfolded her.

He then raped her, and later left her outside his car. The victim managed to flag down a bystander who called police. Through DNA evidence, as well as a result of an investigation with the Taxi & Limousine Commission (TLC), Singh was identified as the attacker.

A New York man was arrested, charged and convicted of larceny after renting out Flatbush apartments he did not own, the New York Daily News reported.

The incident began when an unsuspecting woman went to look at an apartment in Flatbush.

She paid the security deposit, but she never received the keys to the apartment. 26-year-old Broker Ronald Johnson of Max Realty, couldn’t provide the woman with the keys because the apartment was not his to rent.

Ronald also scammed several other prospective renters. He used to meet his clients on the street and requested security deposits.

Despite not being able to hand over the apartments he cashed the checks. Ronald was tracked down after the bank at which the checks were cashed identified him.

After a trial in Brooklyn Supreme Court, a jury voted to convict Johnson of felony theft charges. He faces up to 15 years in prison.

Syrian rebels claim Assad completely destroyed Eliyahu Hanavi synagogue

The Eliyahu Hanavi synagogue completely flattened
By: Aarav Sen

The oldest synagogue in Syria, was completely destroyed this week and the rebel forces claim that the government is to blame.

The Eliyahu Hanavi synagogue, which is located in the Damascus suburb of Jobar, was flattened over the weekend.

The attack not only ruined a site that is at least 400 years old, it also destroyed thousands of irreplaceable Jewish artifacts that were held at the synagogue. The area where the synagogue once stood has been under bombardment by forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for months.

The Syrian regime is laying siege to the city, one of the few rebel strongholds in the area. All this is part of what the opposition calls for Assad's policy of random and violent attacks against the civilian population.

Shlomo Bolts, an official of the Syrian American Council, said that he is extremely distraught about the incident. Before the war, the synagogue held thousands of religious and cultural treasures, including old Torah scrolls, historical texts and Judaica of all kinds.

Some of the items were already looted in the early days of the war. The Eliyahu Hanavi synagogue was built in honor of the prophet Eliyahu.

The site has been a Jewish pilgrimage destination for centuries. It is said to have been built over the cave where Eliyahu hid from his pursuers.

Largest virtual tour with 360 degree view of Jerusalem launched on the Web

Jerusalem Old City Jewish Quarter
By: Anav Silverman

Web surfers are now just one click away from exploring many sites in Jerusalem, the Tazpit News Agency reported.

Would you like to visit the Western Wall, or delve into Jerusalem’s subterranean history?

Would you like to shop at the Machane Yehuda or Arab Shuqs, pray at Jerusalem’s many synagogues, climb the String Bridge or jump to the Mount of Olives?

Well, now you can, virtually.

Jerusalem 360, is the largest panoramic project ever launched in Israel, enabling anyone to tour over 100 locations in Jerusalem. Only Jerusalem’s unique scent and cool air are lacking. You can enjoy an entire evening in Jerusalem without leaving your home.

Tamir Orbaum, creator of the virtual tour, refurbished and enlarged the tour in honor of Jerusalem's 47th unification anniversary. Orbaum told the Tazpit News Agency that this was only the first phase in this ambitious project. He intends to add more locations, more aerial views and historic backgrounds on the various sites.

Over the span of three years, Orbaum used unique technology to produce this tour. He shared with the Tazpit News Agency some of the obstacles he encountered.

"To take the aerial photos I needed permits from the police. The closer you get to the Old City the more permits you are required to produce from different sources. I then scheduled a recording day, but the weather was bad, so I had to postpone everything for a week," said Orbaum.

Orbaum explained that the idea for the project came as a result of Google Earth's imbalanced representation of Jerusalem's holy sites, setting the primary focus on the Christian sites and churches. "I took a camera and began to photograph the Jewish Quarter in the Old City and Jewish heritage sites. The project developed, and today anyone in Israel or abroad can walk through the streets of Jerusalem, experiencing the city through their computer screen,” Orbaum said.

6 candidates officially register to kick off Israel’s presidential campaign

Rivlin, Shitrit, Shechtman
By: Aryeh Savir

Six candidates began their campaigns to be elected as Israel’s next president, the Tazpit News Agency reported.

The six Israeli leaders have submitted their candidacy on Tuesday.

The candidates are MK Ruby Rivlin of Likud, MK Binyamin Ben Eliezer of Labor, former MK Dalya Itzik, MK Meir Shitrit of Kadima, Nobel Prize Laureate Prof. Dan Shechtman and former judge Dalya Dorner.

Each candidate was required to collect ten signatures from members of the Knesset as a requirement to enter the race. The candidates marched to the office of Knesset Chairman Yuli Edelstein and submitted the registry forms.

The two leading candidates are currently Rivlin and Ben Eliezer. The race has become a passionate, and at times a vicious affair, with supporters and lobbyists working to sling mud at opponents.

The uses of private investigators have been mentioned, bringing Knesset Chairman Edelstein to voice his aversion to these actions, stating: "I regret, and I am sure that we all regret the manner in which the race has been defined by slanders and de-legitimization. The President's Institution is an important one in my opinion and serves as a symbol of the nation's unity, especially during periods of crisis and conflict."

There were expectations that a seventh candidate would join the race, possibly former Foreign Minister David Levy, but that didn’t materialize. It is still unknown which candidate PM Netanyahu will support.

Several ministers and MKs view the president's position as unnecessary and began to prepare for the cancellation of the position. They have so far been unsuccessful.

A poll published by Haaretz has MK Rivlin leading as Israel’s favorite candidate for presidency with 31% support. He is followed by Prof. Shechtman with 22%, Former judge Dorner with 11%, MK Ben Eliezer with only 10%, and lastly, MK's Itzik and Shitrit with only 4% each.

The president will be elected by the 120 members of Knesset next month.

16-year-old Justin Hoskins, was left to babysit three young children.

When two of the kids got into a fight, Hoskins snapped and lost control. He beat the 5-year-old boy, causing severe brain injuries.

Police are looking into whether it was too much for the teenager to handle three young children while their mother was at work.

Phoenix Police said that Hoskins was left to care for the children of his father’s live-in girlfriend. The kids are 5, 3, and 4 months old.

5-year-old Ian Blair reportedly got into a food fight with his 3-years-old sister during lunch. Hoskins ordered him to stand in the corner as a punishment, but Blair refused to stay in the corner.

Hoskins snapped and allegedly pushed the boy in the chest, causing him to lose balance and hit his head on the floor.

After the boy fell and became unconscious, Hoskins placed the child in his bed and did not call for help.

When the victim’s mother returned home from work she thought her son was napping. However, a few hours later when she went to check on her son, she found him covered in vomit.

Blair was rushed to a hospital where he was found to be suffering from extreme bruising to the right side of the brain, swelling of the eyes and face, and other bruises on his body. Doctors were unable to save the little boy.

The teenager was originally charged with child abuse, but after Blair died, he may face murder charges.

The dangerous shopping cart game took the life of the 18 year old, who is a father of an 8-month-old boy.

Chance Werner of Cartersville, Georgia, died when his friends used him as an anchor for the “shopping cart game.”

The shopping cart game is played by putting someone into a shopping cart, which is tied with a string to a pole on a dock.

Then the shopping cart with the person inside is pushed towards the lake, when the string can go no further, the person inside the shopping cart is sent flying into the lake.

On Saturday night, several teens were partying and playing the shopping cart game at Lake Altoona. The teens used Werner as a substitute pole. They tied the string to Werner and pushed the shopping cart toward the lake. Sadly, Werner was not strong enough and he was pulled into the lake together with the shopping cart.

Werner was unable to swim to safety as he was being dragged down by the shopping cart. The fire department located his body three hours later, and was still attached to the shopping cart. May he rest in peace.

(Scroll down for video) With selfies becoming more popular, people are uploading them showing every part of their body.

Butt selfies are also becoming a more common scene on social media.

A New York spa decided to cash in on this new trend
by offering “bum facials,” so people can get the perfect image of their backside.

The “Shiny Hiney Facial,” is an exfoliating treatment for the backside and upper thigh. The treatment is designed to cleanse, exfoliate, hydrate or otherwise treat the skin.

Treatment can include the use of steam, extractions, special cleansers, moisturizers and skin massage, which leaves the backside ready for a great-looking selfie.

The price for the treatment is $65 and lasts 30 minutes. The brains behind this idea is skin expert Molly Lamb. Her interest in skin care came after her own struggles with her skin.
