Israel hit with over 1 million cyber attacks on first day of Operation Protective Edge

IDF Twitter account hacked
By: Aryeh Savir

The International Cyber Center announced that Israel was hit with over one million cyber attacks on the first day of Operation Protective Edge, the Tazpit News Agency reported.

The battle against terror is being fought in cyberspace as well.

Data provided by the International Cyber Convention at Tel Aviv University, showed that there has been a 900 percent increase in cyber attacks against Israeli government sites.

“We deal with an average of 100,000 attacks a day, and in the last day, we have faced 1,000,000 attacks,” said Major-General Yitzhak Ben Yisrael, head of the Cyber Center at Tel Aviv University at a meeting. Ben Yisrael pointed out that the attacks originate from all around the Muslim world and not only from Hamas, whose hacker unit is still primitive.

Ben Yisrael indicated that the volume of attacks is probably higher. “We know of about 1 million attacks on government bodies and big companies. If a private individual is attacked – we have no account of it,” said Ben Yisrael.

“People think that cyber attacks are about data security. Those are the easy attacks. The serious attacks are against physical infrastructure. The trains for instance, are piloted by computers. A virus inserted into the system can cause a deadly accident,“ he explained.

As an example, Ben Yisrael related to the Assad’s hacker unit – the Syrian Electronic Army. In 2012, they hacked the computers of an arrogation system in northern Israel and shut it down.

“We initially received a notice that the entire water system in the Haifa area was down,” recalled Ben Yisrael. “The good news was that it was a false alarm. The bad news was that system was attacked.”

Israeli economy suffers loss of just $3 million due to fighting with Gaza

The Israeli economy is proving to be extremely resilient to the ongoing fighting with Gaza, the Tazpit News Agency reported.

The Israel Tax Authority announced on Tuesday, that over 100 claims have been made as a result of damage caused by the rockets fired from Gaza.

So far, the damages have caused $3.44 million in losses.

The Israel Tax Authority has sent out their appraisers to provide initial assistance to citizens whose property has been damaged by the fighting.

At least 35 cars were destroyed, 52 structures were damaged and 12 claims were made regarding damage caused to agriculture.

Further damage was caused to municipal property and infrastructure. Two families whose homes were severely hit were evacuated to hotels.

Another heavy cost is the call up of IDF reservists. A cost of one reservist is estimated at 600 shekels ($175) per day. So far, some 15,000 reservists have been called up, with an option of expanding to a total of 40,000 soldiers.

The use of the Iron Dome anti rocket system has been proven as very effective in defending Israel’s citizens with a 90 percent accuracy rate, but is extremely costly as well.

In comparison, the Second Lebanon War cost 11.2 billion shekels ($3.2 billion), Operation Cast Lead cost 3.57 billion shekels ($1.1 billion) and Operation Pillar of Defense cost 2 billion shekels ($580 million).

The general economy is also affected by the fighting, although Israel’s government is doing its best to maintain a state of ongoing business.

Minister of Economy Naftali Bennett issued a special order that forces workers to show up in industries considered vital to the economy. Minister of Transport Israel Katz, instructed the director of the port of Ashdod, Yitzchak Blumenthal, to immediately suspend the chairman of the workers union Avinoam Shushan, who illegally instructed employees to leave their jobs due to the security situation.

The Minister instructed the workers to return to work immediately and said that Shushan's conduct was scandalous and made the illegal decision on his own.

Israel Deputy Defense Minister announced that Israel should cut off Gaza’s fuel and electricity supply in response to recent rocket attacks, the Tazpit News Agency reported.

Danny Dannon of Likud, demanded during a Security Cabinet meeting that Israel stop supplying Gaza with electricity and fuel.

“The supplying of electricity and fuel to the Gaza Strip, must be stopped immediately,” said Dannon. “It’s inconceivable that on one hand we are fighting Hamas, and on the other hand we supply them with electricity and fuel, which they use to propel rockets at us.”

He demanded that Israel use all its leverage to bring Hamas to a cease fire. This morning, an Egyptian military official stated that Egypt has destroyed 19 tunnels connecting the Gaza Strip to the Sinai region.

This further hinders Hamas’ supply and rearmament efforts.

(Scroll down for video) Millions of Israelis came under rocket fire overnight, as Hamas aimed missiles at northern Israel for the first time, the Tazpit News Agency reported.

For the first time a rocket has been fired from Gaza at the northern town of Hadera, which is situated 100 kilometers (62 miles) away from the Gaza Strip.

Earlier, a rocket fired from Gaza hit Israel’s capital city, Jerusalem. A rock concert with some 6,000 participants was surprised by the attack. The concert was immediately stopped and all were dispersed.

Tel Aviv was also attacked by rockets, and within three hours, the sirens sounded multiple times. As a result of the attack, the U.S. embassy in Tel Aviv has issued a warning to U.S. citizens in Israel.

The embassy will operate at minimal staffing until further notice. Chief of Mission personnel will not be allowed to travel south of Tel Aviv without prior approval. Embassy families living in Tel Aviv, are being advised to remain at home and in close contact with one another.

“Recent events underscore the importance of situational awareness. We remind you to be aware of your surroundings at all times, to monitor the media, and to follow directions of emergency responders,” the notice stated.

Since the beginning of Operation Protective Edge, about 160 rockets have been fired at Israel. 116 of them hit Israel and 29 were intercepted. During the previous day, Gaza terrorists fired approximately 80 rockets at Israel. The IDF has targeted 270 terror sites across the Gaza Strip.

5 senior Hamas operatives, 10 terror tunnels, 98 concealed rocket launchers, and 18 weapon storage and manufacturing facilities have been targeted. Of the weapon storage facilities, 5 of them were located inside mosques.

Dozens of new Israeli immigrants celebrated their arrival to Israel, despite the increased rocket fire from Hamas terrorists into Israel, the Tazpit News Agency reported.

Despite the escalating security situation, 64 new immigrants from the United States made aliyah to Israel with Nefesh B’Nefesh.

The new immigrants come from Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Virginia. The youngest immigrant is an eight-month-old baby while the oldest, Lottie Herman, is 92. Herman, who fled Germany in 1939 to the United States, will be living in Jerusalem.

Among the other immigrants who arrived this morning, was Becky Kupchan, 26, from Chicago, Illinois. Kupchan will be moving to Be’er Sheva, the capital city of Southern Israel.

“Although the security situation in Israel is very tense right now, and in Be’er Sheva where I’m about to move rockets are falling, I am not afraid and I trust the Israeli government and the IDF,” said Kupchan, after she arrived at Ben-Gurion Airport.

“I’m a Jew and I’ve always dreamed about making Aliyah to Israel, my home -- and at home you always feel safe,” she added.

“The Olim who’ve chosen to make Aliya to Israel during these challenging days are real heroes, and each one of them fills our heart with pride and great inspiration,” said Rabbi Yehoshua Fass, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Nefesh B’Nefesh. “Becky from Chicago, who has chosen to live in the city of Be’er Sheva in the south, is one of them, and we will do whatever we can to assist her in her new home in the State of Israel.”

The aliyah of Tuesday’s group was made in partnership with the Ministry of Aliyah and Immigrant Absorption, the Jewish Agency for Israel, KKL and JNF-USA, and Nefesh B’Nefesh.

According to Nefesh B'Nefesh, 97 percent of its immigrants have remained in Israel, thanks to its support programs and comprehensive social services to more than 38,000 newcomers.

The new Israeli citizens will be moving to Beit Shemesh, Givat Shmuel, Hadera, Jerusalem, Karmiel, Modi’in, Nes Tziona, Ra'anana, Beit Shemesh, Ramat Gan, Tel Aviv, and Be’er Sheva.

(Scroll down for video) The Israel Defense Forces killed four heavily armed Hamas terrorists as they were making their way into Israel, the Tazpit News Agency reported.

The IDF eliminated the four terrorists at sea.

The terrorists were spotted on their way to a beach on Israel’s southern shores, and their final destination was the Kibbutz of Zikim. The terrorists were spotted while diving from Gaza's shores and were stopped by IDF infantry, who ambushed them on the Israeli shore.

All terrorists were killed in the gunfight that ensued. One soldier was lightly wounded. Judging by the amount of weapons the terrorists were carrying they probably intended to inflict severe damage to the civilian population at the kibbutz and the surrounding towns.

All residents in the area of the incident were ordered to stay in their homes and masses of security forces are currently blocking off the area. A security official has announced that the operation has not yet been concluded. They may be searching for further terrorists.

Earlier today, the IDF Spokesperson announced that the IDF attacked a vehicle in which a Hamas terrorist, Mohammed Shaaban, 24, of Jabalya, had been traveling. Shaaban was a trainer and commander of Hamas' naval commando force in northern Gaza.

Two other people were inside the vehicle when it was struck, the IDF said. He may have trained the terrorists who were eliminated earlier today.

Man buys girl cell phone and extorts her to send him nude photos

(Scroll down for video) A man was sentenced to 30 years in prison on child porn charges.

U.S. Attorney Damon P. Martinez and Carol K.O. Lee, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Albuquerque Division, announced that Antonio Gutierrez, 44, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, was sentenced today to 30 years in federal prison for his conviction on three production of child pornography charges.

After he completes his prison sentence, Gutierrez will be on supervised release for five years and will be required to register as a sex offender. Gutierrez also was ordered to pay $14,060 in restitution to the victim for his criminal conduct.

Gutierrez was arrested based on a criminal complaint alleging that he induced a minor to engage in sexually explicit conduct for the purpose of producing child pornography.

Gutierrez subsequently was charged with three counts of production of child pornography in a superseding indictment alleging that he committed the offenses in Bernalillo County.

Gutierrez was convicted on all three charges after a five-day jury trial. The evidence at trial established that Gutierrez gave the victim a cell phone on her 16th birthday, and told her that he would pay the cell phone service bill if she repaid him with nude photographs of herself, and the victim used her cell phone to take two photographs of herself without clothes and sent the images to Gutierrez’s cell phone.

This began a monthly cycle of Gutierrez refusing to pay for the victim’s cell phone bill unless she provided him with nude photographs of herself. With each passing month, Gutierrez escalated the nature and extent of the sexual conduct in which the victim was required to engage when photographed.

After the victim reported Gutierrez’s unlawful conduct to the Albuquerque Police Department, officers executed a search warrant at Gutierrez’s residence and seized computers, computer-related media and cell phones.

A subsequent forensic examination of Gutierrez’s personal computer revealed many sexually explicit photographs, including sexually explicit photographs of the victim taken by Gutierrez.

Gutierrez testified in his own defense and denied that he produced any child pornography. Gutierrez also claimed that he did not know how the child pornography ended up on his computer.

She was charged with six counts of first-degree murder. Darren West, the woman’s estranged husband, spent more than eight years in federal prison after pleading guilty to charges of methamphetamine possession.

He told police that he found a dead baby in a small white box covered with electrical tape. The other newborns were wrapped in towels, shirts or within individual boxes in the garage.

West is not a suspect in the deaths. DNA results revealed that seven babies were full term, and five were girls and two were boys.

These tests also confirmed that West was the biological father of the children.

The father of seven said that neighbors did not dare visit his house for several years. “I am a person who does things differently. I'm not like normal people,” Van said.
