A woman was seriously injured after being stabbed by her husband before he jumped off the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, police in New York said.
The New York Police Department said that 47-year-old Brian Helfer, died after jumping from the top level of the Brooklyn bound side of the bridge just after 8:30 a.m.
His wife, 51-year-old Anne Helfer, remained in critical condition at Staten Island University Hospital. Police received a call of a stabbing at 70 Croft Place in Willowbrook.
Once there, police discovered Anne Helfer in bed with two stab wounds to the torso. Three children, aged 9, 14 and 15, were inside the home when police arrived.
One of the children made the initial 911 call. The children were not injured. The husband fled the house in his vehicle to the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.
