Hasidic Jews in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, New York, are shocked after learning that a mezuzah was ripped off a door post in an anti-Semitic attack.

The New York Police Department said that they launched an investigation on Thursday, after they received a call about the mezuzah vandalism.

The NYPD Hate Crimes Unit, is calling it a bias incident.

Police officers interviewed people and reviewed security cameras in order to track down the suspect.

"I am surprised and disturbed that a mezuzah, which is a religious symbol of profound importance to the Jewish faith, was ripped off the home of a community member last night," Council Member Steve Levin said.

"We stand united against acts of hatred, and we will pursue those responsible for the attack. Last year, multiple mezuzahs were desecrated in the same community and the criminal was found quickly thanks to the work of the NYPD. I have full confidence in the New York Police Department as they investigate this crime, and will continue to work with them through the entire investigation," he concluded.

London mayor puts Palestinian flag on top of Town Hall building angering local Jews

Palestinian flag on Tower Hamlets Town Hall
By: Aarav Sen

The mayor of a London borough had the audacity to place a Palestinian flag on top of Town Hall, angering local Jews.

The mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman, a Muslim, unleashed a storm of protest after the Palestinian flag raising at Town Hall in solidarity with Gaza.

This comes just 24 hours after it emerged that Rahman is facing trial over allegations of widespread electoral fraud he committed.

Jewish leaders condemned the move as "destructive" for community relations and local residents.

Rahman was expelled from the Labour Party after allegations emerged about his close ties to an Islamic extremist group called the Islamic Forum of Europe.

He is accused of using illegal tactics to win the mayoral election in Tower Hamlets, east London.

He tweeted a photo of the flag, with the message: “Palestinian flag flying at Town Hall in solidarity with #Gaza, and in support of a ceasefire and peace.”

The measure runs the risk of angering the Jewish community in the east section of London, and fueling divisions in the city for the wrong reasons.

Jonathan Arkush, senior vice president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, said: “The mayor must remember that he is flying a flag in support of an organization that is seen throughout Europe and the world as terrorist. It's totally inappropriate. It is also destructive of the relationship between the communities that make up our capital city."

Just days after Rome, Italy, was covered in hateful graffiti the anti-Jewish vandals have struck again, police said.

The fresh anti-Semitic graffiti appeared on walls in the Prati neighborhood on Wednesday.

The phrase “torch the synagogues,” appeared on the same spots where other graffiti read: “Jews the end is near.” In a shopping area, windows had been defaced with swastikas.

The head of the National Police and a delegation of politicians visited the chief rabbi of Rome, to express their support.

Jewish schools, synagogues and institutions have been placed under 24-hour protection, not only in Rome but throughout Italy.

Israeli Ambassador to Italy, Naor Gilon, also visited the area.

"It's terrible to see swastikas on Jewish shops. Nazi symbols are making a comeback after 70 years," Gilon said. "It is important that all Italian politicians to speak out against anti-Semitism."

Earlier this week, dozens of swastikas, hate slogans and posters were plastered on the walls and windows of shops. At least 70 sites were vandalized throughout the city.

“Dirty Jews," "the end for Jews is near," "away with the Zionists," and "Israel executioner," were some of the slogans painted on the walls.

Some posters had a swastika and the phrase "Anne Frank storyteller." Other posters had the image of a Celtic cross and a Palestinian throwing a rock at an Israeli army tank.

Jewish leaders as well as local and state officials strongly condemned the vandalism. Rome Mayor Ignazio Marino described the incident as shameful and an insult to all Romans.

Marino expressed solidarity with the Jewish community, and declares that "Rome will and must be the capital of dialogue and peace, and not the land of barbarism."

Interior Minister Angelino Alfano promised that the police will identify those responsible and further restrict such incidents.

Hamas stations sniper unit on tenth floor of main Red Crescent building

A group of Hamas terrorists received advanced military training in Malaysia, the Tazpit News Agency reported.

IDF forces have captured several hundred Hamas terrorists over the course of Operation Protective Edge.

Many of them have been turned over to the Internal Security Agency for further questioning. One terrorist revealed another of Hamas' plans to kill and abduct Israeli soldiers and civilians. A Shabak investigation exposed that Hamas terrorists received training in Malaysia and Gaza to infiltrate Israel by air to kidnap and murder Israelis.

In the early hours of July 21st, IDF forces captured a Hamas cell commander in Khan Yunis, in southern Gaza. When questioned by Shabak, also known as the Shin Bet Security Service, the cell commander revealed that he had been sent by Hamas leadership to Malaysia, for paragliding training. The plan was to parachute into Israel to kidnap and murder civilians.

The prisoner also revealed Hamas plans to ambush Israeli soldiers with anti-tank missiles and even pointed to a terrorist sniper nest on a map of Gaza. The location was the tenth floor of the Palestinian Red Crescent building in Khan Yunis.

The investigation of this terrorist commander reveals the process of shaping a terrorist. After being recruited into Hamas’ military wing in 2007, the terrorist underwent regular combat training. Every five months, he would attend refresher courses, which involved training with Kalashnikov automatic rifles, Soviet-made PKC machine guns and locally manufactured hand grenades.

In 2010, the terrorist was enlisted into a special force sent to Malaysia, for parachute training, in preparation for a cross-border kidnapping attack on Israel. He and ten other terrorists from across Gaza spent a week receiving training in Malaysia.

After returning to Gaza, the terrorist cell was given additional weapons training. They were warned to maintain secrecy, and not to reveal details of their Malaysian training to anyone.

In 2014, four years after being sent to Malaysia, the Hamas commando squad was summoned for more parachute training. This time the training took place inside the Gaza Strip. According to the prisoner, the squad was not told about where the kidnapping attack would take place.

The terrorist told investigators about a Hamas training camp that took place in June of this year. Exercises involved training with handguns, Kalashnikovs, M-16s, RPGs, machine guns and demolitions training. Terrorists who attended the camp were trained in various methods of kidnapping soldiers and how to operate inside Hamas’ extensive tunnel network. The terrorist was meant to attend such a course after Ramadan.

Ultimately, he was arrested by IDF soldiers operating in Gaza during Operation Protective Edge.

A Shabak spokesman said that the details of their investigation revealed the extent of the efforts and resources that Hamas invested in bolstering its military capabilities, including the building and training of a standing commando army to attack and kidnap Israeli soldiers and civilians.

"Hamas goes to incredible lengths to carry out attacks against Israel. That is why the IDF will not rest in its mission to dismantle the organization’s terrorist infrastructure and keep the people of Israel safe," the spokesman concluded.

Israeli soldiers find terror tunnel inside Gaza mosque (video)

Entrance to terror tunnel inside Gaza mosque

(Scroll down for video) A group of Israeli soldiers found and destroyed a terror tunnel that they found inside a mosque, the Tazpit News Agency reported.

The IDF is continuing to dismantle the terror tunnels in Gaza, while deepening its hold on the Gaza Strip.

For the first time in the operation, the IDF entered the Jabaliya refugee camp. Israel has reportedly stepped up its military strikes on Hamas targets as well.

In one incident, Givati forces shot and killed a gunman, who fired an anti-tank missile at troops in the southern Gaza Strip. In the course of house searches in the central Gaza Strip, IDF soldiers uncovered sensitive intelligence gathered by Hamas on the IDF, numerous weapons, and a large number of tunnels used as bunkers linking several houses.

A joint IDF task force further uncovered the tunnel entrance on the ground floor of the mosque that had been used by Hamas terrorists to attack Israeli soldiers.

Three soldiers were killed yesterday, when the structure they entered, a former United Nations clinic, blew up. They were operating in Gaza in order to uncover offensive tunnels, and indeed uncovered a tunnel opening inside a house in the southern Gaza Strip.

Two explosive devices were detonated near the soldiers, one from within the tunnel and a second one that was concealed within the house. The explosion caused the building to collapse and several soldiers were injured.

Fifty-six soldiers and three civilians were killed since the beginning of the operation. The IDF is set to call up an additional 16,000 reservists today, to give the military “some breathing room,” bringing the total of reserve soldiers to 86,000.

Israel called for another four-hour humanitarian truce yesterday afternoon, which Hamas did not accept. Indeed, Hamas fired more than 140 rockets into Israel in the course of the day.

Endless reports on a possible ceasefire continue. An Israeli delegation reportedly flew to Cairo for ceasefire discussions, and left after just a few hours. The Hamas delegation did not come. Egypt was said to be refusing to host a Palestinian delegation until Hamas stops firing rockets, which it is refusing to do.

Channel 2 reported that some 300,000 residents of southern Israel, have left their homes since the start of Operation Protective Edge due to the rocket fire from the Gaza Strip and the infiltration threat.

Many are reluctant to return, as the tunnel threat is still a concern. Since last night, the IDF and IAF have targeted approximately 110 terror activity sites across the Gaza Strip. Five of the targets were the homes of senior Hamas officials who used their homes as command and control centers.

Over the past 24 hours, over 140 rockets were fired at Israel, 81 rockets hit Israel, 9 were intercepted, and 50 fell short in the Gaza Strip. 36% of rockets fired at Israel yesterday fell short in the Gaza Strip. Hamas has fired over 2,670 rockets at Israeli civilians since the beginning of Operation Protective Edge.

In the video below, you can see the Israeli soldiers discovering the terror tunnel inside the Gaza mosque.

Beware of the most common pest control scams

Illustration
By: Anika Rao

When you have a pest problem in your home, you want it taken care of fast.

Your first impulse is to call a pest control service, and schedule an inspection and treatment.

Unless you have used the service before with good results, you should first consider a few things to avoid some common pest control scams.

Get Recommendations

You should shop around for a pest control company before taking any action including asking friends and neighbors for their recommendations, said the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension.

Additionally, UNCE and the Better Business Bureau recommend comparing estimates from several pest control companies before making any decisions or paying any fees.

Check Out the Company

UNCE also suggests that homeowners check out the company before hiring them and ask them these questions:

Check if the company is a licensed pesticide applicator with your state's Department of Agriculture.

Ask to see the license, and look for a photo identification of the licensee and a current status.

Check with the Better Business Bureau for information and complaints about the companies you are considering.

Ask if the company will provide a written estimate of the work needed and costs before doing any work.

Ask if they will provide references and proof of insurance.

Red Flags

UNCE says to avoid using any companies that show red flags when you are looking into using their services. Some of these include:

Don’t accept the use of any secret chemicals proposed for your job because all pesticides must be registered with the EPA, and you want to know what they are applying in and around your home.

Don't go with companies that use high pressure sales tactics or have unusually low prices or sales.

Don’t use companies who have more than a few unresolved customer complaints recorded.

To avoid many of these red flags, you should only use pest control services that display their accreditation from the BBB on their website. For example, one such company is Waltham Services, who shows that they are a BBB accredited business as well as approved by Quality Pro and Green Pro.

Common Pest Control Scams

Beyond the common business red flags, there are many pest control specific scams to look out for. Angie’s List, a popular home maintenance and repairs referral service, reports that although the market is filled with pest control scams, these are most common:

Scams involving licensed technicians: It’s common for pest control companies to send out a technician with a valid license on an initial call to write up the order, but then send another technician (without a license) to do the actual application.

Unsolicited inspections: If you get a knock on your door from a representative from a pest control company that you haven’t called offering a free inspection or special deals, beware. A common scam is to show up unannounced, pretend to inspect for pests and sneakily stage evidence of an infestation to convince homeowners that they need their services.

Permanent contracts: Do not sign up for any long term contracted pest control work, especially if there is any pressure to sign without much explanation. A common scam is to perform a legitimate application, then say you need monthly applications for a year or more.

A group of elephants in China, became addicted to heroin after being fed the drug by smugglers.

Once the elephants are addicted to the substance, they are more likely to obey the orders of the gang members, who can use them to smuggle drugs in huge quantities on the border between China and Myanmar.

Four of the creatures have been rescued by Chinese conservationists, who used methadone to wean off the elephants from heroin.

The animals have been reintroduced to their natural habitat. The elephants became addicted to drugs after being fed bananas laced with heroin.

The animals were given methadone as a substitute for heroin, and rescuers have slowly reduced the amount through the course of a year.
