2,000 year old Bar Kokhba coins and money box found near Jerusalem Tel Aviv highway

Archaeologists found ancient Jewish coins and a money box near the new Jerusalem to Tel Aviv highway, the Tazpit News Agency reported.

Pottery sherds and fragments were discovered by an Israel Antiquities Authority inspector during extensive work by the Netivei Israel National Transport Infrastructure Company, Ltd. on the new Highway 1 project.

A previously unknown settlement from the Second Temple period was discovered, as well as a rare hoard of coins that was found in one of its houses along the new highway connecting Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

The hoard, which was kept in a ceramic money box, included 114 bronze coins dating to the Year Four of the Great Revolt against the Romans. This revolt led to the destruction of the Temple on Tisha B’Av (the ninth day of the Hebrew month of Av), 2,000 years ago.

“One of the significant points of the find is that all the coins were dated the same year and each have the same worth,” Pablo Betzer, one of the excavation directors of the Israel antiquities Authority told the Tazpit News Agency. “The location of the find is also significant as it was found outside Jerusalem."

According to Betzer and Eyal Marco, the other excavation director on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority, the hoard appeared to have been buried several months prior to the fall of Jerusalem. “It provides us a glimpse into the lives of Jews living on the outskirts of Jerusalem at the end of the rebellion.”

“Evidently, someone here feared that the end was approaching – perhaps he could see the advancing Roman army and did not want to take a chance. He hid his property in the hope of collecting it later, when calm was restored to the region,” Betzer said.

All of the coins are stamped on one side with a chalice and the Hebrew inscription “To the Redemption of Zion” and on the other side with a motif that includes a bundle of lulav between two etrogs. Around this is the Hebrew inscription “Year Four,” the fourth year of the Great Revolt of the Jews against the Romans (69/70 CE).

The hoard was concealed in the corner of a room, perhaps inside a wall niche or buried in the floor, and was discovered after three weeks of digs in the area. Two other rooms and a courtyard belonging to the same building were exposed during the course of the archaeological excavation.

The structure was built in the first century BCE and was destroyed in 69 or 70 CE when the Romans were suppressing the Great Revolt. Early in the second century CE, part of the building was reinhabited for a brief period, which culminated in the destruction of the Jewish settlement in Judea as a result of the Bar Kokhba rebellion. This is attested to by three complete jars that were discovered embedded in the courtyard floor.

It seems that the residents of this village, like most of the Jewish villages in Judea, were active participants in both of the major uprisings against the Romans – the Great Revolt and the Bar Kokhba Revolt. As a result of their involvement the place was destroyed twice, and was not resettled.

The Israel Antiquities Authority and Netivei Israel Company are examining the possibility of preserving the village remains within the framework of the landscape development alongside the highway.

Hundreds of Jews visit the Temple Mount on Tisha B’Av despite Muslim protests (video)

(Scroll down for video) Despite being surrounded by Muslim protesters, hundreds of Jews visited the Temple Mount on Tisha B’Av, the Tazpit News Agency reported.

The group visited the Temple Mount on Tuesday morning, to mark Tisha B’Av, the Jewish national day of mourning and fasting for the destruction of the two Temples, which both stood on the Temple Mount for nearly a millennium until they were destroyed by the Babylonian and Roman empires.

The Jewish visitors were met by hundreds of Arab protesters who shouted “Allah Akbar” and “Get Out.” This was the first time in three years that Jewish visitors had been permitted to enter the mount on Tisha B’Av.

Rabbi Chaim Richman, the international director of the Temple Institute, who led a large group of Jewish visitors, commented that the group went up to the Temple Mount, considered Judaism’s holiest site, in a show of unity.

“Today, on Tisha B'Av, the day upon which the Holy Temple was destroyed, we came together with hundreds of Jews to the Temple Mount to fulfill the commandment of being in the holy place, to pray there for the welfare of the IDF soldiers, who are defending all of Israel, and to show that the cycle of endless mourning can only end when the Jewish people are ready to accept responsibility for the rebuilding of the Holy Temple,” said Rabbi Richman.

“That responsibility rests squarely upon our shoulders. The sages of Israel have taught that the Holy Temple can only be rebuilt once the nation has achieved a level of unity and unconditional love. Throughout the past few weeks, our nation has witnessed to a level of unity that is almost unprecedented in memory. This is the type of unity and commitment that will enable our generation, with the help of God and with the will of the people of Israel, to rebuild the Holy Temple,” Rabbi Richman added.

In the meantime, the Temple Institute’s campaign to raise money for the architectural plans for the third temple continues to generate interest with over 250 donations after being launched on Indiegogo a few days ago. According to Rabbi Richman, the campaign, which is supposed to turn the message of Tisha B’Av from one of mourning to building, has raised thousands of dollars from hundreds of people worldwide.

Ben Gurion University researches develop computerized personality profiling system to analyze enemy leaders

Ben Gurion University
By: Anav Silverman

Researchers at Ben Gurion University have developed a groundbreaking computerized personality profiling system to analyze Israel’s enemies, the Tazpit News Agency reported.

The ability to understand the minds of political leaders is an important aspect of strategic intelligence.

In this context, personality profiling is a common practice that has traditionally relied on the expertise and intuition of human psychologists, according to researchers at Ben Gurion University of the Negev (BGU).

However, BGU professors of psychology, Yair Neuman, Golan Shahar, and programmer Yochai Cohen, are introducing a novel computer-supported methodology for personality profiling, which will be published in the American Intelligence Journal.

The methodology aims to help stakeholders better understand strategic competitors and allies for both rationally and for psychologically managing their policy. The professors cited the current conflict with Hamas as a prime example.

“If we characterize Khaled Mashal, as someone with a psychopathic personality, then we would expect him to feel omnipotent, fearless, to perceive others (particularly Israel) as weak and vulnerable, and that his relationships revolve around games of ‘predator-prey.’ A man like that won’t be significantly affected by injury to innocent citizens or the destruction of infrastructure because he lacks the ability to empathize. He will manipulate and defraud in the pursuit of his own personal interest. In this case, any attempt to simulate empathy or to try and appeal to his emotions is a strategy doomed to fail,” explained Professor Neuman.

“These insights are highly important in understanding the personality and planning a campaign against it,” added Neuman.

Mashal is one Hamas leader-turned tycoon, who has amassed a fortune worth $2.6 billion, among other Hamas leaders who have made millions from the flourishing tunnel industry and fundraising as the unemployment rate in Gaza stands at 40%.

In addition, Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, has capital worth $4 million and has arranged for family members including his sons and daughters, to live in beautiful homes in the Gaza Strip, worth at least $1 million each. During the recent war, media reports surfaced of Khaled Mashal living a lavish lifestyle out of a luxury hotel in Qatar.

The ability to understand one’s enemy is an important card in any battle. Psychologists have been building personality profiles of leaders for years, explain BGU experts.

“The CIA built a personality profile of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, which explained to the Bush administration that what they attributed to a lack of rationality actually derived from the Middle Eastern rationale of ‘showing off.’ In other words, so long as the leader is not defeated once and for all or publicly humiliated, the entire struggle with the U.S., even if it comes at a catastrophic price to his fighters and citizens, will be perceived as a victory and a symbol of masculinity. This conclusion offers a clear lesson for the current struggle against Hamas as well,” concluded Neuman.

(Scroll down for video) Guests of a New York hotel are angry after the guest house vowed to issue a $500 fine for leaving a bad review online.

The hotel called Union Street Guest House, located in Hudson, faced a storm of criticism on Monday, after it was revealed that the hotel charges invited guests to wedding parties $500 for negative Yelp reviews.

"Please know that despite the fact that engaged couples love Hudson and our inn, some friends and families do not," reads the policy.

“If you have booked the inn for a wedding or other event, and have given us a deposit of any kind, you will be fined $500 to be deducted from your deposit for each negative review written on the Internet,” the policy states.

The policy received hundreds of negative comments all over the Internet.

Hotel owner Chris Wagoner, responded to the outrage, saying that the policy was meant as a joke.

"The policy of fines was put in place in response to a wedding many years ago. It was supposed to be taken down a long time ago, and certainly was never enforced," he said.

His explanation may be too late. As of Monday afternoon, the hotel has an average of one-star rating with 704 reviews.

A woman persuaded a man to come to her home for “better sex” after he raped her in a field.

The clever woman hatched a plan to get revenge against her rapist and have him locked up. Her plan worked.

The 30-year-old rapist, who was identified as Mkhululi of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, was arrested after his victim tricked him to accompany her to her house.

The 38-year-old victim tricked the rapist into believing that she had enjoyed the encounter so much that she wanted more. She persuaded Mkhululi, to come to her house where they could have more comfortable sex in her bed.

Mkhululi fell for it, and as they walked, the victim alerted members of the public and the rapist was apprehended.

A court heard that the victim was walking alone about 8:00 p.m., when she saw Mkhululi walking towards her. She quickened her pace, but he ran after her, grabbed her by the neck and dragged her to a field where he raped her.

“He tried to rape her a second time, but she suggested they go home," said the prosecutor.

The court heard that as they approached the house of the woman, she saw a group of people and called for help. Mkhululi tried to flee, but was captured by members of the public and taken to the police station in Pumula.

Regional Magistrate Crispen James Mberewere, sentenced Mkhululi to 12 years in prison of which three years were suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar offense within five years.

Before sentencing, Mkhululi told the court that he was married and his wife was expecting their first child.
