North Miami Beach Police said that 60-year-old Joseph Raksin of Crown Heights, Brooklyn, was murdered on his way to a local synagogue on Saturday morning.
The murder unfolded on 10th Avenue and 175th Street NE, the local Jewish community said. While walking on the street around 9:00 a.m., he was confronted by two young men.
Raksin was shot by one of the two young men, police said. Raksin was airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center, where he later died.
Police are looking for the two male suspects, one of whom may have fled on a bicycle. The other left the area on foot.
Yona Lunger, a local Jewish community activist and member of the Shmira Patrol, confirmed that Raksin was an Orthodox Jewish rabbi from Brooklyn, who was in South Florida to visit his granddaughter and other relatives.
Raksin had no altercation with the two young men when he was shot, Lunger said.
