Hamas breaks 8-day-old ceasefire with Israel by firing 3 rockets at Be’er Sheva

Rocket fired from Gaza into Israel illustration
By: Aryeh Savir

The week-long ceasefire between Hamas and Israel, was shattered after three rockets landed in Be’er Sheva, the Tazpit News Agency reported.

Terrorists from Gaza fired the three long-range rockets on Tuesday afternoon, ending the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

No terror organization claimed responsibility for the attack.

An IDF spokesman confirmed that the three rockets fell in open areas, causing no damage or injuries. Reports indicate that no warning sirens were sounded when the rockets exploded in Israel.

Further reports indicate that Israel's government has ordered the IDF to resume its strikes against terrorist targets in the Gaza Strip, in response to the rocket fire.

Shai Hajaj, Head of the Merchavim Municipal Council in the Negev, voiced concern and disappointment of the current situation.

"The terrorist organizations led by Hamas, do not respect agreements time after time. We will not accept fire on our communities and the government must care for the safety of its citizens. The school year is scheduled to commence in the coming days and the buildings are not properly fortified. There are only a few bomb shelters, which cannot properly house the student population, and they are too far away to reach in time," Hajaj said.

The attack comes amid contradicting reports about a possible breakthrough in the Egypt-brokered truce talks between Israel and Hamas in Cairo.

Earlier today, Sami Abu Zohari, Hamas' spokesman in Gaza, blamed Israel for “dragging its feet’ in the negotiations. "Israel bares the responsibility for the stagnation in the negotiations, and shows no willingness to obtain an agreement," said Zohari.

A recent survey has revealed that nearly all Israelis are “pleased with their lives,” the Tazpit News Agency reported.

Despite continued security and economic stressors in Israel, the majority of Israelis are satisfied with their lives, according to the Central Bureau of Statistics.

86% of Israelis, or about 4.3 million citizens, reported that they are "satisfied" or "very satisfied" with their lives, while only 14% reported that they were unsatisfied.

The survey on the personal well-being of Israel's citizens was conducted throughout 2013, based on responses from 4,700 residents aged 20 and over.

According to the findings, 53% of respondents, corresponding to some 2.6 million Israelis, were satisfied with their financial state. This represents a drop of 3% from the previous year, with men slightly more satisfied with their finances than women.

39% of respondents said that they expected their financial state to improve. In addition, 65% said that they were able to cover their monthly household expenses.

27% of respondents reported feeling constant or frequent stress, and 19% percent said that their sleep is always or frequently affected by worry. The survey found that an additional 34% experienced sleeping problems "frequently" or "sometimes."

Despite this, 39% percent responded that they always or often felt full of energy, while an equal number said that they felt energetic "sometimes" or "occasionally."

An aggressive culture is a concern for Eitan Divinsky, a returning immigrant. He added that financial concerns, as well as having his family overseas, were also significant sources of stress.

However, Divinsky rated his overall life satisfaction in Israel as 9 out of 10. He noted that one of the factors contributing to his positive outlook was the mutual support and unity that he feels among people here. "I love living on my own land, in a place that I can call mine," he added.

Notice of $1 peanut sale

A store found a clever way around a ban of selling water during a music festival.

Shops in Portland, Oregon, are not allowed to sell water during a music festival when the temperature outside is at 90 degrees.

One store, the Grilled Cheese Grill, decided to circumvent the absurd rule by giving away free water. The store attached two posters to their window, notifying customers about their special summer sale.

The store is offering a peanut for just $1. As a free gift, the store is giving away a bottle of water with the purchase of the peanut.

Musicfest Northwest is an annual music event. An image of the two posters was uploaded to Reddit, and it has since gone viral on the Internet.

“This weekend at MusicfestNW, the lack of available water, free or otherwise, was kind of ridiculous. There were no water stations anywhere. Food carts weren't allowed to sell beverages of any kind. So for day two, we found a loophole and drove that bus right through it,” the store wrote on Facebook.
