Senior Israeli officials calling for new ground invasion of Gaza due to heavy rocket fire

Gaza rocket causes explosion in Sderot
By: Ze'ev Ben-Yechiel

Senior Israeli officials called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to launch a new ground offensive into Gaza, in response to heavy rocket fire, the Tazpit News Agency reported.

The current rain of rocket fire from Gaza continues unabated throughout the afternoon, with over 170 rockets launched into Israel by Hamas since the terror group broke the last ceasefire on Tuesday.

A spell of relative quiet was ruptured by yesterday's volley of rockets aimed at Be'er Sheva, coming just as the two sides seemed to be converging on a long-term truce agreement.

Code Red rocket sirens in Israel continue to pierce the air through the late afternoon hours on Wednesday. In return, Israel has renewed airstrikes against terror targets in Gaza, scoring hits on rocket launchers, storage facilities and personnel.

As of Wednesday evening, 97 strikes have been confirmed, an IDF spokesman told the Tazpit News Agency. One airstrike targeted the home of Mohammed Deif, leader of Hamas' military wing, resulting in the death of his wife and two of his children.

A third body from the attack remains unidentified and is suspected to be that of Deif himself. Hamas maintains he is still alive, while the Fox News quoted Israeli intelligence officials as saying that he died in the airstrike as well.

The Deif killings prompted a massive barrage of 50 Hamas rockets that peaked around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, including landings near Jerusalem as well as southern and central Israel.

An IDF spokesman told the Tazpit News Agency that an additional 122 rockets were fired since midnight, an average of one rocket every nine minutes. Of these, 94 landed in open areas, with 15 interceptions by the Iron Dome systems.

The IDF also announced on Wednesday, that it has recalled 2,000 reservists who were previously scheduled for release.

Meanwhile, the security cabinet met on Wednesday, to decide Israel's response to the continued escalation. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened the meeting in the Defense Ministry's headquarters in Tel Aviv, in order to discuss the latest developments and to plan the next course of action in Operation Protective Edge.

Senior government officials as well as local leaders responded to the latest provocation by calling for another ground incursion into the Gaza Strip. Housing Minister Uri Ariel told Israel's Channel 2 news outlet that “the actions until now did not bring quiet. It’s clear there is no choice but a ground offensive."

Alon Strauss, head of the Sha'ar Hanegev Regional Council, vowed that continued attacks by Hamas, will bring their own downfall. “Hamas wants the IDF to enter Gaza, impose order, drive them out of power, and give us a life of dignity devoid of their terror,” he said.

Strauss vowed this is what will happen if Hamas continues down the path of violence. “An alternative is that Hamas will mature to the point of being able to sit down with us in Cairo to pursue a genuine commitment to peace,” he added.

"In the next months, there will be no war of attrition," he continued, referring to Hamas' recent threat to drag Israel into a prolonged struggle. "There will be a full-out war if this continues. This is not a prediction," declared Strauss.

"If they want to improve the conditions of citizens, they will have no choice but to sit down at the negotiating table. Otherwise, the war will be in backyards, alleyways, and the bunkers of Hamas," Strauss concluded.

Ashkelon Hospital moves babies to bomb proof area due to barrage of Gaza rockets

Babies at Ashkelon Hospital being moved to bomb proof area
By: Anav Silverman

Several Gaza rockets exploded in Ashkelon today, prompting hospital officials to move babies to a bomb proof area, the Tazpit News Agency reported.

Since Tuesday night, Hamas has fired 100 rockets into Israel with approximately 30 rockets throughout the course of Wednesday, according to the Israel Defense Forces.

Rockets struck throughout southern Israel, with one directly hitting a home in Ashkelon today and another on a shopping mall yesterday.

The armed Abdul Qader Husseini Brigades of the Fatah movement to which the Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas belongs, claimed responsibility for the two rocket attacks on Ashkelon on Wednesday morning.

Following the rocket attacks, Ashkelon's Barzilai Medical Center had its premature babies and newborns transferred to sheltered areas both underground and into a special delivery room located in a concrete bomb shelter.

“We’ve transferred 14 premature and 30 newborns as well as five mothers who just had caesarean sections, to more protected areas in the hospital,” the Medical Director of Barzilai Medical Center Dr. Chezi Levy told the Tazpit News Agency.

“We are trained for these kinds of war situations and we’re waiting to see what develops following the renewed rocket attacks,” Dr. Levy told the Tazpit News Agency.

“We are working closely with army officials in assessing the situation and deciding what our next steps will be. This is not the first time that the hospital has had to undergo security precautions, but we definitely hope it will be the last,” he said.

Barzilai Medical Center, established in 1961, has 300 doctors, 700 nurses and 532 patients, according to the center’s spokeswoman, Ayelet Kedar.

Two weeks ago, when the Egyptian-brokered ceasefire went into effect, the Ministry of Health and the Home Front Command announced that Barzilai Medical Center would return to full normal activity, setting new dates to all patients whose appointments were postponed during Operation Protective Edge.

Today, the hospital is carefully monitoring the current escalation of rocket attacks from the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, and is acting cautiously, hospital officials said.

In other news, the Israel Home Front Command issued new security instructions on Tuesday night, for southern Israelis, forbidding gatherings of over 300 people in communities within seven kilometers of the Gaza Strip. Gatherings of 500 people within 40 kilometers of Gaza have also been canceled.

Other security measures include the closing of beaches and urban markets in the south, while public bomb shelters were reopened in communities located 40 to 80 kilometers (about 50 miles) from the Gaza Strip.

Local authorities in central Israel, also ordered the opening of public bomb shelters a few hours after Hamas violated the ceasefire on Tuesday, with rocket attacks on Be’er Sheva. The mayors of Rishon LeZion, Rehovot, Ramat Gan and Tel Aviv ordered the opening of public bomb shelters on Tuesday night, when minutes later a heavy barrage of rocket fire from Gaza began.

Hamas' Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades fired rockets at central Israel and claimed that it fired the Iranian Fajr 5 missiles at central Israel and the M-75 missile at Jerusalem on Tuesday night, where sirens were heard shortly before midnight. Eight rockets targeted Tel Aviv on Tuesday night, and a rocket was found in the Beit Shemesh area.

The Iron Dome intercepted at least five rockets heading for residential areas throughout the night, and several more during Wednesday, including one over Kiryat Malachi and over the Hof Ashkelon region.

Hamas breached the Egyptian-brokered truce on Tuesday afternoon, seven hours before it was supposed to end, firing a barrage of rockets at Be’er Sheva and southern Israel.

The 80-year-old woman of Taipei, Mrs. Chang, suffered a stroke and became partially paralyzed.

Her son hired a woman of Indonesia, as a live-in nurse to care for her. While caring for the elderly woman, the nurse was sexually harassed.

The old woman asked the nurse to undress so she can rub her breasts. The nurse refused. Chang then touched the breasts of the nurse when the nurse was helping her go to the bathroom.

The frustrated nurse recorded a conversation between her and the old woman. She told Chang's son about the sexual harassment and Chang son promised her that she will never do it again.

Jaacob Van Winkle
By: Aarav Sen

(Scroll down for video) A family is angry that a murderer avoided the death penalty after pleading guilty to a horrific crime he committed.

The convicted sex offender killed his former girlfriend and her two young children in Colorado.

31-year-old Jaacob Van Winkle, pleaded guilty to all 36 charges against him in exchange for a life in prison sentence rather than getting the death penalty.

Van Winkle stabbed 35-year-old Mandy Folsom, her 9-year-old daughter Marissa, and her 5-year-old son Mason, in Canon City.

Her 16-year-old daughter, the sole survivor, managed to escape and ran to a neighbor to get help.

District Attorney Thom LeDoux said that the cost of litigation in a death penalty case was a factor, one of many.

He also said that the decision of Gov. John Hickenlooper in the Nathan Dunlap case played a role in moving his office to accept the plea deal.

Dunlap was scheduled to die for the deaths of four people at a restaurant in Aurora in 1993. However, Hickenlooper granted him a “temporary reprieve,” a decision that probably means Dunlap will not face execution as long as Hickenlooper is governor.

In 2004, Van Winkle was convicted in Indiana, of child molestation and other sexual crimes involving girls as young as 5 and 7 years old. He failed to register as a sex offender after moving to Canon City.

At sentencing, Van Winkle is expected to receive three consecutive life sentences.
