Police chief decapitates young boy’s pet chicken and leaves its head on the property

Phoenix Turnbull with his chicken
By: Sanvi Rizvi

A police chief punished a family by decapitating their chicken.

5-year-old Phoenix Turnbull of Atwater, Minnesota, received baby chickens and ducks for his birthday.

He took care of the pets and became very attached to the animals. However, the family did not know that it was against city ordinance to have poultry at home.

Authorities ordered the family to remove the animals from their property, but when they did not comply, the officer decapitated one of the chickens and left its head on the family’s property.

The child’s mother, Ashley Turnbull, filed a formal complaint against the Atwater Police Chief for trespassing on her property, killing her young son's pet chicken and leaving the decapitated head just feet from the backyard chicken coop.

Ashley Turnbull acknowledges that she was told by police to remove the three chickens and two ducks. However, she said that Police Chief Trevor Berger, went too far when he came onto her property about a week later, when nobody was home and killed the small hen with a shovel.

“The chicken was like a puppy dog to my son. You wouldn't do that to a puppy,” said Turnbull.

Berger said he was simply enforcing the city ordinance that has been in place since 1960, and he was responding to a “frustrated” neighbor's repeated complaints about the chickens running loose in the residential neighborhood.

Berger apologized, saying that he was sorry it had to happen that way. He also claimed that he did not intend to leave the severed head at the home.

Berger said he thought the head was still attached to the chicken when he carried the carcass away.

Israeli agriculture experts help farmers in India increase production of pomegranate

Pomegranate illustration
By: Anav Silverman

Israeli agriculture experts are currently in India, helping farmers implement technologies to increase pomegranate production, the Tazpit News Agency reported.

For nearly 23 years, relations between India and Israel, have progressed rapidly, both politically and commercially.

Experts have worked together in the fields of sciences, culture and particularly in the area of agriculture since the two countries entered full diplomatic relations in 1992.

In its mission to transition to sustainable agriculture and diversify its food sources, India has been utilizing Israeli technology.

Recently, an Israeli expert from the Ministry of Agriculture, Itzhak Kosto, held a two-day “Pomegranate Seminar” at the Center of Excellence for Fruits at Mangeana in Sirsa, which is located near Punjab.

The center is one of the 20 Indo-Israeli agriculture centers in the country that utilizes Israeli technology to solve agricultural issues.

Kosto spoke about supplying fertilizers to plants through drip irrigation as well as pest and disease management.

While India grows one-third of the world's pomegranates and is the largest producer in the world, only 3 percent of its fruit is exported.

Israel on the other hand, produces 60,000 metric tons of pomegranates and exports nearly half it because of the high quality of its pomegranates.

"We're here to train the trainers. We're trying to adapt Israeli technology to Indian conditions and we are sure that we will get good results," explained Kosto according to a report in the Business Standard.

In addition, Israel is also planning to set up another "A Center of Excellence" for technological solutions to agricultural issues in Goa, in the West Indian region of Konkan.

Israel's consul general in Mumbai, Davik Akov, told Indo-Asian News Service recently that Israel is already assisting in creating such a center in Goa.

"We believe that Israeli technology can assist certain areas of interest to Goa, like agriculture and maybe once we look in-depth, we can start looking at other areas of cooperation between Israel and Goa," Akov added.

By March 25, 2015, Israel will have set up 29 such technological centers assisting Indian farmers in improved production of fruits and vegetables, under a mutual cooperation agreement signed between the two countries.

33-year-old Crown Heights man arrested after sexually abusing 12-year-old female relative

A Crown Heights man was arrested, charged and convicted of sexual abuse after sexually abusing his young female relative, prosecutors in New York said.

Kings County District Attorney Kenneth P. Thompson announced that the 33-year-old Brooklyn man has been convicted of first-degree sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child for molesting the 12-year-old female relative.

District Attorney Thompson said: “This is a terrible case of a child being sexually abused by a person she should have been able to trust. This child’s innocence has been lost and now the defendant must be punished.”

The District Attorney said that the defendant, Roodly Loiseau of Crown Heights, was convicted yesterday of two counts of first-degree sexual abuse and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child following a jury trial before Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Danny Chun, who set the sentencing date, at which time the defendant faces up to 14 years in prison.

The judge raised the defendant’s bail from $10,000 to $100,000 upon his conviction.

The District Attorney said that according to trial testimony, on two occasions, the defendant entered the bedroom of the 12-year-old victim and touched her private parts.

Sometime thereafter, the defendant told the victim that he had sexual relations with her while she slept and ordered her to take a pregnancy test.

The victim then told her mother about the abuse as well as the defendant’s claim that he had sex with her. The mother later notified the police and the defendant was arrested.

Two thirds of Arabs in West Bank and Gaza favor radical Hamas over moderate Fatah

By: Ze'ev Ben-Yechiel

A new poll showed that the majority of Arabs living in the West Bank and Gaza, favor a radical over a moderate government, the Tazpit News Agency reported.

Support for Hamas has surged following Operation Protective Edge, according to the results of a survey published on Tuesday.

The Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research (PCPSR) found that 61 percent of those polled would choose Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh over Mahmoud Abbas. Only 32 percent said they would vote for Abbas.

The poll of 1,270 Arabs in Judea, Samaria, and Gaza, began on August 26, the last day of this summer's war, and continued over the next four days. It showed an increase in support for the terror group over the course of the war.

Some 79 percent surveyed in this poll said that they believe that Hamas won the Gaza war, and it may have been this perception that led 72 percent of respondents to say that they support Hamas' approach of violent resistance and would like to see it implemented in the West Bank.

"Indeed, an overwhelming majority of Arabs in the West Bank, wants to transfer 'Hamas’ way to the West Bank and rejects the demand to disarm the Islamist group or to disband the other Gazan armed groups," read the report from the PCPSR.

The group also reported that for the first time in eight years, more people voiced support for Haniyeh than for Marwan Barghouti, the arch-terrorist currently serving 67 consecutive life sentences in an Israeli prison and for years the most consistently popular political figure among Arabs in Judea and Samaria.

86 percent of respondents said that they support the renewal of rocket attacks on Israel if Hamas' demands are not met. Of those polled, roughly 40 percent were residents of the Gaza Strip and 60 percent were from Judea and Samaria, PCPSR told the Tazpit News Agency.

Of all respondents, 54 percent said that they supported the murder of the three kidnapped Israeli teens, while 42 percent opposed it.

Among Gazans, 69 percent said they supported the killings, while only 42 percent of Judea and Samaria residents were in favor and 52 percent against the murders.

Professor Mordechai Kedar, a scholar of Arabic literature and lecturer at Bar-Ilan University, believes that support for Hamas is much higher in Judea and Samaria than in Gaza.

“The West Bank doesn't suffer from Hamas, so they have the luxury of supporting the group. On the other hand, he added, they do suffer from the current Abbas administration,” Kedar said.

Don’t let your teen drive your car until you've read this

Teen driving car illustration
By: Hydar Tomar

Teenagers want to drive.

If they have their driver’s license, they want to take your car.

A car of his own may be the way to go. When your teenager is late coming home—you can't sleep, and you have a million thoughts going through your head. Was my child in an accident? Was my child speeding? Has the car broken down?

If you decide to get your teenager a car, should you go older and less expensive, or should you shell out the money for a new car? There are safety options in new cars that can give you peace of mind when the kid drives away to pick up a date.

Tire Pressure Monitoring

If your teen comes home late and claims it was because of a flat tire, and the car is equipped with this feature— then you will know that it wasn't a flat tire that kept the child out so late.

Installed in the wheels, sensors will alert the driver if tire pressure is too low. The instrument panel will show the alert, an audible alert will sound or both will alert the driver simultaneously.

This is a great feature, especially for a teenager that is just beginning to drive. Instead of taking time out of the day to find the tire gauge and stop at the corner gas station to fill the tires—or worse, not finding the tire gauge and eyeing the tires to check “when a tire is low," all the teen has to do is (hopefully) not ignore the tire pressure alerts to avoid a disaster.

Blind Spot Detection

It’s hard enough for adults to catch the car lingering in the blind spot, but teenagers have a worse time with blind spots. This feature helps with that.

Blind spot detection works with sensors and cameras that will alert the driver when there is a vehicle that is not visible. Whether you are driving or parking, the detection system will alert the driver by flashing a symbol on the side view mirror, vibrate the steering wheel or issue an audible alert. Many of the systems can tell if it’s a large or small object—car or pedestrian. Keep in mind that blind spot is for short range only.

Lane Departure Warning

Blind spot detection has short range capabilities, which means that it can sense only objects around the car. This safety option has sensors that can measure a greater distance from the vehicle.

This feature warns drivers of potential problems when changing lanes by judging another car’s speed and distance. If the car is drifting out of the lane, the driver is alerted by the steering wheel, seat vibration or an alarm. Future improvements on this feature include the car’s ability to monitor body posture and measure eye activity and head position. In severe cases, the feature’s system may slow the car down and stabilize the vehicle.

Collision Avoidance System & Autonomous Braking

Using forward-looking radar sensors, the collision system gives warnings (audio and visual) to alert the driver that the car is getting too close to the one in front of it. If the warning is ignored or not responded to, autonomous braking provides automatic braking to lessen the impact upon collision. These systems work best and more effectively together. Most new cars come equipped with crash avoidance systems, including the Volvo S60, Acura MDX and Mercedes E-Class.

Reverse Backup Sensors

This safety feature alerts you if you're backing up and about to hit something. It can detect cars, animals and children, and begins to beep when the driver is getting close to an object. As you get closer, the beeps become more frequent.

Modern cars come equipped with more and more safety features. Until now, some of these safety features have only been in luxury cars—now they are becoming standard. Invest in the best for your teen and use an online vehicle search tool to navigate MSRP, dealer invoice price and browse new vehicles.

If you decide to get your teenager a new model car, you may want to spend the extra money to ensure not only better safety, but a better night's sleep for yourself.
