A man was killed during a shootout between three intruders and a man who was protecting his granddaughter.
The incident began when three masked men broke into the home of 67-year-old Kenneth Byrd of North Carolina.
The three home invaders allegedly tried to rape his 19-year-old granddaughter. Kenneth and his wife Judy, 65, were held at gunpoint and he was ordered to open their safe.
Byrd managed to grab a gun from his safe and shot the three men. The men returned fire and shot Byrd several times before fleeing in the old man’s Cadillac.
20-year-old Jamie Faison died of the gunshot wounds. His accomplices, Jamar Hawkins, 17, and Brandon Stephens, 28, were hospitalized after suffering from gunshot wounds.
Stephens and Hawkins face a number of charges including robbery and capital murder in the death of Faison.
Byrd was also taken to a hospital and is in critical condition.
