A man was taken to a hospital after breaking into a home and trying to commit suicide with a spatula, police in New Jersey said.

The Ewing Police Department said that 48-year-old Dwayne Jackson of New York City, was visiting a friend in a house on Arden Avenue around 11:30 p.m., when he began to act strangely.

Jackson ran out of the house and went to another house in the 200 block of Ewingville Road. He knocked on the door, and a 72-year-old woman opened.

Jackson asked to use her phone. She refused his request and Jackson asked how to get to Trenton. She gave him directions and tried to close the door.

However, Jackson forced himself into the home. Jackson entered the kitchen, went through the drawers, pulled out a spatula and tried to cut his throat.

When that did not work, he found a butcher knife and stabbed himself in the stomach. A 76-year-old man came out of a bedroom with a loaded gun.

Jackson attacked the man and managed to wrestle away the weapon. Jackson then put the gun to his chin and fired. The elderly couple was unharmed.

Police officers who arrived at the scene, found Jackson laying face down on the floor of the house.

He was transported by ambulance to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton, where he was said to be in stable condition.
