(Scroll down for video) Police have arrested Maria de los Angeles Pineda, the wife of a mayor in Mexico, for mass murder and other organized crimes.

The mayor and his wife of Guerreros, were on the run after they were accused of ordering the kidnapping and killing of 43 students.

Since mayor Jose Luis Abarca was on the run, authorities replaced him with a new mayor. The couple has since been arrested and charged with a host of crimes.

Pineda, who is accused of ordering the kidnapping of 43 students in a case that has shaken the country, is now facing federal charges of money laundering and organized crime activities, authorities said.

Pineda was arrested and transferred to a highly secured federal prison after prosecutors accused her of using illicit funds and being involved with a drug cartel.

Pineda and her husband fled the small town of Iguala, where students were abducted as they traveled by bus to protest against local corruption.

Both have been charged with murder and kidnapping in connection with the disappearance of the students and teachers.

The remains of the students were found in a mass grave outside the city. DNA testing cannot be used in this case and FBI agents are helping to run genetic testing.

People stood outside the court where the two were charged and are demanding justice for the students who were brutally murdered.

Authorities said that Pineda and her husband were the masterminds behind the kidnapping and murder of the students.
