A man was sentenced to serve time in prison after being caught with a stash of cash in his car, prosecutors in the United Kingdom said.
The illegal immigrant was found in a car on the M1 in Hertfordshire with 152,000 euros ($180,173) hidden inside the vehicle.
The haul of cash was hidden in the rear of the car.
28-year-old Fatjon Shehu of Albania, who was living in Ampthill, appeared at the St. Albans Crown Court, pleading guilty to a single offense of concealing criminal property.
Prosecutors told the court how around 6:00 p.m., police in a marked patrol car stopped a Saab car traveling along the M1 close to junction 9.
The defendant was in the car and officers noticed he was extremely nervous. The prosecutor said Shehu gave a false name and was taken to St. Albans police station.
A closer search of the car revealed two packages hidden behind a seat.
At first, officers thought it must be drugs, but on closer inspection it was discovered that the packages contained bundles of euros.
His home was searched, but nothing could be found to explain the cash. Shehu told police that he had been acting as courier for the cash and expected to earn 200 pounds ($302).
The court was told that he had no previous convictions either here in the country or in his native Albania. The defendant had previously been deported from the country, but had returned illegally.
The court told Shehu that he got involved in an operation to smuggle money for “illicit purposes.” He was told that it was a serious offense, and he was sentenced to serve 21 months in prison.
