(Scroll down for video) A man was arrested on charges of murder after allegedly throwing his young daughter off a bridge while being chased by police, police in Florida said.
The St. Petersburg Police Department said that they arrested 25-year-old John Jonchuck Jr., after allegedly throwing 5-year-old Phoebe, off a bridge during a police chase.
The incident began when a police officer who was driving home after 12:00 a.m., saw a car fly by, driving about 100 miles per hour.
The officer began to follow the suspect. When Jonchuk reached the Dick Misener Bridge, he left the vehicle, ignored the officer’s order to stay inside and reached into the right rear passenger seat, where his daughter, Phoebe, sat.
Jonchuk took the child in his arms, went to the side of the bridge and intentionally dropped the child in the water. He then went back into his vehicle and fled the scene.
The officer heard a splash in the water below, and tried to climb under the bridge to save the girl, but the current was too strong.
Several law enforcement agencies joined the pursuit for several miles. Jonchuk finally stopped his car in the middle of a highway and was taken into custody.
The girl’s body was later recovered from the water. Jonchuck is being held at the Pinellas County Jail, on charges of murder.
